Re: Ride London 2019 anyone?

I had an early start, Blue D at 0616 so prepared breakfast the night before, and scarfed it down on the way up - cold cheese omelette in a slice of bread washed down with Torq energy drink, then a banana and a gel. Parked at Kipling St NCP and rode to the start along A11 with a load other riders. Th...

Re: Ride London 2019 anyone?

I purchased 8 oat bar things from Lidl yesterday, tried one, and very nice it was too, just over 200 calories a pop. Will be getting up at circa 04:00, zero chance in hindsight, I will be able to get any food down me that early, so planning to stick 4 or 6 in jersey, and eat perhaps 4 for breakfast...

Re: Ride London 2019 anyone?

The B2033 at Headley (sharpish s bend then a steep kicker up) is closed and has been for months. Apparently until 16th August. Presumably RideLondon know this but haven't updated any of the routes... I guess it's possible the road works will make some space for the event. If not that's one hell of ...

Re: Ride London 2019 anyone?

From the official site: Participants who live, park or plan to be dropped off south of the river can use the Rotherhithe Tunnel to cross the river. The tunnel will be closed to traffic from 04:00-08:00. Please note: the Blackwall Tunnel remains open to traffic in both directions and will not be ope...

Make the most of that bit, it's really fun.

The descent from Newlands Corner is good as well. Nice surface, not too steep and a good runout at the bottom.

Re: Ride London 2019 anyone?

Does anyone know where I can download a TCX or GPX of the route? I can't see one on the official page, and have come across some older routes which seem to be the same route as this year. But Wasn't sure if there was anything "official" Thanks There is no official TCX or GPX because some ...

Re: Really disappointed with my first Sportive performance

I think the OP was really looking for some context and perspective, no more. As for the pain of birth going away, yes maybe true, but having three kids (now adults) I can tell you that the mental pain seems to have been going on for 23 years so far. In relations to average speeds, I must beat you a...

Re: Really disappointed with my first Sportive performance

I've been riding sportives for 12 years, Dragon Ride every year, an Etape,, May Flyer, Spring Onion etc and numerous hilly club rides in the Surrey Hills. My average speeds are ALWAYS between 13.5-14.5mph, even with the occasional 40 mph plus descents or 20 mph flat chain gang segments. These are ri...

Re: Any advice for 150 mile ride?

As above, treat it as 3 x 50 and don't start out too hard. I have ridden many 100 mile+ sportives here and abroad and treat them like segments of my 25 mile club café run, but eating a gel of Clif Shot chew block every 10 miles. Hydration is very important - start with a couple of 750ml bottles of y...

Re: Riding road bike on muddy cycleways?

There is a youtube video of somebody doing what are essentially trials on a Cervelo with carbon wheels, jumping and hopping it through rock gardens, over logs etc. Your bike will be fine.

Re: Velo South 2018

Oh for sprockets sake - why are we arguing about the ferocity (or not) of a storm - it really doesn't matter - the event has been cancelled because there's a good chance of weather that would make it dangerous to ride for a good number of the participants - participants are getting refunds - that's...

Re: Velo South 2018

Really? Could you tell us which ones were worse than 1987? 2013 and 2017 come to mind - but it depends on how you are categorising 'worse'. 87 was mainly as bad as it was due to the lack of preparedness as much as anything else. According to the Met Office neither were as bad as 1987. Cost of damag...

Re: Velo South 2018

Strong winds at the end of September into October is not unusual.... it’s almost predictable Not this strong. My buddy reckons this is the worst he’s seen coming in, since 1987. Sounds like your weather-watching 'buddy' is about as well-informed as you usually are. There have been far worse weather...

Re: Velo South 2018

l'etape London seems to be going ahead. Looking at comments earlier about poor support for Velo Birmingham riders, vs my experience of l'etape Wales (as one of the last finishers, I was escorted in by a motorbike marshall, I got my medal, I got my pint of horrible alcohol free beer ), it seems to m...

Re: Velo South 2018

I just flown into Birmingham Airport and the pilot has a job landing the plane !!! - and thats with the 25mph winds here today - imagine an extra 10 mph on top of that. I seem to recall wind speed is given at a 10 mt height about ground level. Typically it is a lot lower at the level we cycle. If w...

Re: Ride London 2018

That reminds me, not long after the off that year there were loads of discarded rain capes at the side of the road as the rain stopped for a short while. I suspect many would have regretted that decision as it was torrential for the rest of the ride. I saw one of those at the start line, just out o...
