    Avid Juicy's, Shimano's

  • Wiggle have Shimano XT's at œ125 for a full set. Massive bargain. Or you could probably get yourself a set of Juicy 5 / 7s

XT's are only 100 on Wiggle, bargain, i run shimanos, reliable stoppers. two thumbs up. Avids are also mint but they have a larger price tag. I'd go for the œ100!!!!! XTs.

You can get XTR for œ200 a set, or a set of hope minis, never heard a bad thing about XT ones though and at that price you'd have some extra to spend elsewhere

    Hi

I'm new to the forum, and I've just got back into mountain biking after a very long sabatical, I first started when Girvin flexistems were considered better than those awful heavy suspension forks.

Anyway, the bike I've just bought is a 2004 Cannondale F600, which has Magura Julie hydraulic brakes, I was wondering if it would be worth upgrading? To the Shimano XT's that were mentioned earlier on the forum from Wiggle?

I bought the bike second hand and it's in brand new condition.

Any kind of help or advice would be great.

    Thank you.

I have a flex stem on my Breezer at the moment as I use it for commuting :)

As for the brakes, ride the bike and see if they stop you :) I have Julies on my Azonic. They do they job but I was shocked at the mad power of the new Hope M4's the other day! Not tried XT etc but they are probably better than the Julies. Get them from Wiggle as mentioned above for œ100 ish as they are not in boxes etc then flog the Julies on ebay for upto œ50

Thank you very much Mr Breezer sir, I'm glad that someone is still using Flexistems - can you still get replacement elastomers for it?

hi i would take the juicy 5's have them on a focus raven, tried xt's good but the juicy is better especially if you like a bit of late braking.but there is the hope mini pro a nice price tag but it has power in bucket loads.

I would also go with a set of Juicy 5s with 185mm rotors, Even the Juicy 3s are excellent value for money as they are nearly identical apart from the dual bolt on levers. I tend to prefer the feel of the Juicys over the LX/XT brakes.

I won't buy anything other than Shimano as far as brakes go. The XT's are incredibly good value for money.

    Quick look at wiggle;

Front and Rear with disc brake set with rotors and mounts,
Shimano XTR œ190.77 (some of the best brakes out there)
Shimano XT œ138.99 (outstanding brake and very light)
Shimano LX œ107.97 (work perfectly well and a great price)
Hope Mini with posh hose & floating rotor œ250.29 (cost but if your feeling patriotic they work well)
Hayes 9 œ190.78 (little tricky to work on but work great)
Avid Fives œ161.98 to 179.98 (in my opinion there over rated and more importantly way over priced)

How can you say there cheap when you can get a full set or XT's for œ40 LESS or a set of XTR's for only œ10 more? Both are arguably superior brakes as well. I would say juicy are spongy and lack bite. Guess it depends on what you expect from your brakes though.
  • i went for Shimano XT M765 brakes. Work well and i'm really pleased. Helped me stop during Mountain Mayhem in all that mud.

    cheers guys.

Have a look at Formula Oro's. they may be slightly over the £200 (about £110 each end) but they are very good. The other reccomended ones are good too and most of them are cheaper. Have a look at Reviews

Ditto, I just picked a set (F+R) from Merlin for the wallet friendly sum of £99.95 delivered! :D
Finally I can banish the Hayes (ar)So1es.

spongy??? i think thgey may need bleeding!!ive ridden two ses of 06 juicy 5's and they were both fantastic; the lever feel was brilliant, they were solid and powerful. shimano brakes on the other hand i dont find particularly nice to use as they feel 'squidgy' to me and i dont lke the lever.

XTs are grrrreat! I got mine from wiggle a few months ago; contrary to what someone said above they are not OEM but full retail in a nice box with instructions, if that makes a difference to anyone :)
