Winter gloves (for below zero)
OK, probably an oft repeated questions, but reviews for me never seem to get to the nub of my problem.
Cold fingers, now I'm talking when the temperature is significantly sub zero, most reviews seem to be looking at riding down to about zero where most my gloves work fine, but some winters I'm riding below that too from work and below -3/4 they don't cut it (and when I've ridden at -8 fingers have been quite painful until they go completely numb).
So anyone have any suggestion for gloves they know work once you get below that?

When I commuted in such weather I found that ski gloves were about the only type that worked.

I think that it's difficult to make hard and fast recommendations because everyone is different. My Hestra Windstoppers are great down to 0°C, but below that I've got an oldish pair of Pearl Izumi gloves that served me down to -8°C last year. They are quite bulky so I only use them when the weather justifies them. This looks like a close equivalent in their current range: https://pearlizumi.eu/en-gb/collections/all-cold-weather/products/amfib-gel-glove?_pos=2&_fid=802416882&_ss=c
In theory the lobster gloves should be warmer still, but I've never fancied trying them myself. https://pearlizumi.eu/en-gb/collections/all-cold-weather/products/amfib-lobster-gel-glove?_pos=1&_fid=802416882&_ss=c

cycling at temperatures that low, i'd look at 'lobster' style ones...
from a quick google...
...i see they also have some heated gloves...

I commuted a bit over an hour through the last 2 or 3 winters using planet X carnac gloves, Carnac ultimate do me for all but the coldest days (I was leaving 6am ish so cold enough, even in balmy surrey), the really cold weather ones I think used to be called Carnac Ultimate Endurance - don't seem to be on the website anymore but I think the Pleuvoir are the same. I found that if you put them on in the house you minimise that 10 minutes at the start of the ride where your hands are warming up the gloves and you have cold fingers.
The crab hands are probably warmer still but I never felt the need and like Davebradswmtb I just didn't fancy having my fingers bunched up.
They are also pretty cheap

Ski gloves and keep the rest of your body warm.
If you are cold, no glove will keep your fingers warm.

As @davebradswmb said it is tricky as we all feel the cold differently. My only advice is at proper sub zero temps, I have found layering to be the only really effective way of not freezing to the point of hands going numb. I have a thin pair of assos liner gloves (about the thickness of a white cotton glove) which I wear under some Endura primaloft winter gloves. It probably doesn't matter which gloves you use, as long as you can get a thinner glove inside a proper winter glove/mitt. You could also try adding something like a disposable nitrile glove in between the thin layer and the winter glove if you really suffer badly.

Most successful for me in really cold weather have been lobster style gloves, with liners where necessary.
The cheap waterproof thermal work gloves on Amazon are also pretty good although not great if you'll be riding hard as they can get sweaty.
Just got a pair of the new Galibier winter gloves which seem nice but I haven't tried them out yet.

I've used various generic winter riding gloves with liner gloves when really cold, however when doing longer rides at really cold temps I have some mountain equipment g2 alpine ski / mountaineering gloves that i use. I did try some lobster gloves for a bit but tbh didn't get on with them.

Thanks for lots of helpful comments.
I mostly run 'hot' so shorts and T shirt down to just above zero and then a softshell jacket from there and knee warmers if it's below about -4 but my finger tips suffer.
Currently on the warmest Carnac gloves (not the Lobsters) and not enough, have also used Bontrager winter gloves and they are no better.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Thin silk liner gloves work well. Most of the heat is lost from the airflow over the gloves. Make sure the gloves are completely wind proof. You could also try using the disposable gloves from a petrol station over the silk liners and under the gloves. Unlikely to sweat much if it's that cold.
Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

Skytec Thermal Work Gloves – Lightweight Nylon Working Gloves, Gardening Gloves, & Grip Gloves with Cold and Water Resistance - Safety Gloves for Heavy-Duty Tasks - Medium (Pack of 1) https://amzn.eu/d/cqodHx0
these are the cheapo Amazon jobs I've got. Not very sophisticated but probably as warm as any non-lobster gloves I've tried. There are some slightly more refined alternatives if you search for thermal work gloves on there.

Interesting that you find the Bontrager gloves don't work for you, as that was what I was going to recommend, as they really work well for me - very long gauntlet glove, pretty much like a skiing glove, but with more flexibility.
I forget the model, something like RXB, but they are no longer made - I bought a 2nd pair for stock as I liked them that much.
Sounds like you either need liners, and or heated gloves as has already been touted - I hope you find the right solution.

The Carnac Lobster gloves are decent.
Due to long covid, it's been a few years since I used them to cycle commute to my old workplace, so I can't remember if I wore a thin pair of gloves inside them like the Carnac Roubaix or PX 365 I also have along with the excellent 3 season Carnac Ultimate Wind/Rainproof).
IIRC be careful on sizing, when I bought mine the guide said buy XL for my very ordinary sized hands.

Just saw these: https://www.spatzwear.com/collections/january-sale-2025/products/spatz-thermoz-deep-winter-gloves-with-fold-out-wind-blocking-shell-thermozz
No personal experience of the gloves, but the brand are well regarded, however the reviews in the main say they are too thin!
I guess MvdP is working harder than most of us.
