Seemingly trivial things that intrigue you

Of course records are exactly the same as cars...
Anyway, here's an improved version of the Jag ad 😀
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
I've not suggested they are.
Bottom line: were you even considering buying an electric Jaguar? I'm guessing that's a no. That's why the advert is not aimed at you.

Has anyone ever bought a car based on an advert? You'd have to be mad to make one of the biggest purchases of your life based on 30 seconds of shiny TV.

I gave the Jag F Type SVR some serious consideration a few years ago on the back of this ad:
So good adverts can work. Unfortunately if you listen to most people who known about cars and/or advertising they will tell you that the latest one doesn't work.
What makes you think anyone who might be in the market for a luxury electric sports car would be inspired to buy an electric Jag by the latest ad?
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
I'm sure a lot of people are made aware of the car and are made interested by the ad, do a bit of research and then go buy.
"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
And look where advertising to the likes of you has got them. You thought about it and like all but 4,000 odd people worldwide, you went for something else. So it didn't work.
Also, I guess this answers @monkimark's question.

This must have been the most successful car ad in recent years in terms of how much it has got people talking about a manufacturer.

It's definitely worked in almost every way possible. I think it looks like a batmobile, but people seem to like it.
And the attention it's got - phenomenal.

Exactly. Nobody was talking about Jaguar 3 weeks ago.

You didn't answer my question above, which was: what makes you think anyone who might be in the market for a luxury electric sports car would be inspired to buy an electric Jag by the latest ad?

The infamous Bud Light ad a couple of years back certainly got people talking about the brand, but look what it did for sales and the share price of Anheuser Busch.

See my reply above to Pangolin. There is way more to successful advertising than just getting people talking about the brand.

I've already suggested who the market is based on the advertising: younger, wealthy (family) and more interested in high end fashion than cars. I doubt the sports element is of any interest if you are just trundling around Knightsbridge. Car as fashion accessory rather than driving experience.

Sure, but as we've established appealing to old school petrolheads isn't selling any F-types, so that's clearly not the answer either. There's a market for the more traditional 'driving experience' customer, but it doesn't seem to be big enough for Jaguar. I mean they were selling about 10 F-types a day that's barely worth opening a factory for.

So it might help to have a car in the ad, no?
As mentioned, even the Guardian thinks it's pants.

They have got a car. Big pink thing (like the advert). Everyone is talking about it. Job done. Whether the car is any good 🤷🏻♂️. Not a problem I need to worry about.
There are plenty of examples of adverts that don't show the product or just allude to it. They wouldn't keep doing it if it didn't work.

Meh, I think the "no such thing as bad publicity" type analysis is a bit basic here. I also suspect that it's probably not really for anyone in the west...
I think it looks like a cyber truck with less ground clearance and luggage space. But they've managed to get a tremendous amount of publicity around an expensive electric car. Whether there's a sufficient market for very high end electric cars... Well presumably they've done their market research.

The ad has certainly succeeded in wasting a lot of people's time.
Move on...
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -

Problem with Jag is that their main consumer base is China and with the Chinese economy taking a bit of a nosedive and lacking growth it wipes out the market opportunity there of aspirational newly wealthy Chinese entrepreneurs.
Anyway, Jag is heavily subsidised by LR and we all know there a plenty of silicone lips and tooth vaneers driving around in £200k+ Rangies. Useless numpties.
If I wanted a Jag I'd want an Arthur Daley Jag. Pukker like. But in my wildest dreams (see other thread), Jags do not feature, Scimitars do. Sharp ones. Maybe time for a Reliant Reboot too?.
Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

Back in the day I had a series of Jags, all XJ variants. My favourite was my first one. A light blue 1983 Series 3 XJ6 4.2.
Put a twin axled caravan behind it and I swear I could see the fuel gauge moving on the M5.😒

Still tempted to pick up an F Type SVR when I don't need the load lugging capability of The Panzer any more.

They wanted attention for the launch of a new car for their tired old brand that only appealed to people who know who Terry Thomas was. Tick.
They wanted it to not appeal to people who want to be Terry Thomas. Tick.
They got journalists to write prominent articles about how the new car is stunning and bold and like no Jaguar before. Tick.
People will forget the teaser ad if the car pushes the right buttons in the right markets. I think it looks like a car, but I'm not the market for it so who cares?

The view from a professional marketing type is less positive.
As mentioned above, getting people to talk about it and awareness is only one aspect.
