The engineers deserve the credit, Musk gets the credit for bankrolling it.

Oh, sure, it was his idea 😆.

Amazing engineering. Incredible feat by the Engineers.
However, I'm just wondering how much fuel they used for the re-entry stage and if they hadn't bothered to re-enter in a controlled manner how much further the rocket stage would have gone? I know the idea is to re-use rockets but isn't it just a smidge of "greenwashing"?
Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

starship is c. 4 kilotons co2 equivalent per launch, plus all the smaller ones, there are a *lot* of launches, it's absolutely not 'green', though they're using methane rather than even dirtier fuels
rockets also dump pollution direct into the upper atmosphere, not just fuel combustion products, but particles from all the unwanted/sacrificial bits that burn up on re-entry
now that launches (by all companies/states) are at far higher rates than in the state-only days, there's potential for unforeseen consequences

That's a fair point, I considered that.

I guess the rockets just fire for a short burst towards the catch point.

Also, think of all the cost, energy and time to transport it back to the correct launch point. This method, it's set back ready within hours.

Yeah, that's a real short burst of energy.

I mean, look at this crazy shit.

Fair play to him for getting lots of coverage for all his stuff, but I just don't care.
Does he need to sell some shares in something and is trying to get the price to rise?

I think that's unlikely. From the moment the booster stops going up, it starts accelerating towards the earth. The shorter the interval of deceleration the more sharply it will need to decelerate.

True, but it's not in a vacuum. Air resistance will be fighting it on the way up but helping on the way down.

Tbf I'd rather remain on this planet. It will be centuries until Mars is the more attractive proposition.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
Nah, Mars isn't currently run by Lefties so already has an advantage

Yeah, the 'multiplanetary life' bit is the bit you should be concerned about, especially in the context of his witterings about population decline and breeding 'better' people.

I'm going to avoid any unnecessary arguing or negativity and just try and keep this thread positive. I'm just appreciating the incredible CGI like achievement.
I still can't believe they managed it on the first attempt, the SpaceX team must be staggered, all that complexity.
Brilliant

It is though. Not called the red planet for nothing.

All the films I’ve seen suggest they are an authoritarian, far right facist regime that wants to wipe out the inhabitants of planets that aren’t like them. Maybe it is Republican red?

At least that was funny.

Brian, just acknowledge the achievement.

I still find it incredible it's a public company achieving this.

It's a government contractor, receiving $13bn of contracts since 2003.

I still can't believe the precision in that chopsticking.

Yeah! I bet Musk couldn't get something to land and dock on a moving 747 . . .
