I doubt the climb has been ridden that hard from the start, and with the launch attack coming with 10km to go, not a big surprise it smashed records really

Just under 7 minutes left, green jersey group / main bus just in. Not looking hopeful

Pantani was known for attacking from around 10km out.

Kristoff in at 50:26 in 144th. Looking iffy for Cav :(

They’re in with a team display not seen since Mapei. Never seen Cav look so knackered

Cavendish in safely - just - but looks like he's ended up absolutely frozen in position on the drops. Doesn't even have energy to sit back up.

Not sure why anyone was worried, he had nearly two minutes spare....

Poor pace judgement there, lots of wasted energy 😉

As Vaighters just commented, McEwen is incredibly quick at calculating the time cut. It really is a skill of the sprinters.

That was a proper test .....should have ridden for status quo and banked on the third week .... Easy to say in hindsight I guess ...lol

As the GC starts to settle into a 3rd week pattern of who loses the least time rather than who's gaining time, who's wearing the Zubeldia transparent jersey for ghosting into the top 10 unnoticed?

Looking barely visible to me is Buitrago. Now in 7th and hasn't, to my memory spent time with his nose in the wind.

Not going to disagree that he's ghosted his way into the top ten though.

Just caught up - I'm guessing Visma don't think Ving was going to improve next week and just thought this stage was most suited to testing Pogacar's tank.

Fair enough - Pog just has to stay safe now.

Just outside the top ten, has anybody knowingly seen Felix Gall this tour? He's even managed to pick up a twenty second penalty without anybody noticing, which is pretty remarkable low-key nefariousness.

Maybe just me but I don't rate Remco in their league when it comes to the serious climbs.

Or anybody else come to that...

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

He was very visible on the gravel stage, which rules him out IMO.

Pog and Jonas are A+ whereas Remco and Rog (when fit) are A-, not that far behind but you’d be more surprised to see them staying with the other two when one of them attacks than to lose a bit of time. Then again it’s only Remco’s first Tour and he’s another that didn’t have ideal preparation plus it’s easy to forget how you d he still is as it feels like he has been around forever.

I don't think Remco is ever going to be as explosive as the other two, and his descending is a real weak point. He's a Wiggins-type rider and needs the right parcours if he's going to win it.

That doesn't make him a bad rider, and all the other caveats.

He’s won races with an explosive attack in the past. Once he has a gap he’s hard to catch.

Pog confirming my theory that in modern racing, week 3 amplifies the differences in legs.

Only seen highlights but what were visma thinking?
