De Panne really fell out of favour in the 00s as just a massive crash fest. I think the last Flanders winner who rode it was Kristoff 9 years ago.

I think with modern day reconnaissance, the need to "learn the roads" by racing more frequently is just not there anymore.

Just read that Pog attacked with a teammate with 160 kms to go yesterday! They were eventually caught before Pog went again on the final climb. 😯

Apparently they hid in the bushes to have the peloton pass (this may or may not have been a joke - too sleep deprived to work it out)

It's a direct quote, here's the interview. I think they really did!

Shame the next question didn't follow up

You can see why someone like Lance barely recognises modern cycling.

You had people who really built everything around cycling, to the point where they willingly sacrificed their own health and risked having to deal with the police, so everything was serious and hard ass, and then you have the top rider of the moment hiding in a bush in a WT race for a laugh *and still winning*

Ironically, it's exactly that playful attitude that absolutely crushes Pog's opponents psychologically (a Lance speciality) so often: "Think what he'd do if he really tried"

Pog told L'Equipe at the weekend that he "want[s] to be the best in history", so as mentioned above, don't be surprised to see him try and pick up all the "Big7" 1 week stage races over the next few years

That's all well and good until he comes up against Vingers in the Tour.

I think Vingers will be on the downward trajectory before Pog has peaked though, and Pog will pick up a few more at that point (with a couple of Giri and Vueltas in his palmares as well)

Jonas isn't even two years older than Pog (Dec 96 v Sep 98), I don't see much reason for him to go downhill before Pog - especially as Pog started earlier as a GC leader

Anyway, Pog took another minute out of the opposition today. Landa attacked, Pog went with him, then smoked him. Kuss came up to Landa, then there was some faffing about with a Jayco rider. Landa went solo to finish about 50" after Pog and a handful of seconds over Kuss and then the rest in dribs and drabs.

Pog's got them all broken mentally

Ja, racing for second. Pog is basically unrivalled for any distance up to 3 weeks, I'd argue.

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

But MSR is a 1 dayer?

I think you mean something with some meaningful climbing?

I'm not sure, I think he'd do a good job in the Eneco Tour as well. He may have struggled to win the Tour of Qatar, though

The distance isn't the issue for Pog at MSR. The lack of a more attrional race with harder climbs is. He is better at long races than most others. Remember he even beat Mads Pedersen in a long sprint (which was a bit of a Pedersen mistake) at Worlds. I don't think he can beat Mads in a fresh sprint.

Yeah, that was my point. Too easy a race for him to win. As silly as that sounds. 😉

I am glad that somebody managed to take the padlock off the forum door.

Time for the serious cobbles to start, with the first of the 4 "specials" being the E3, tomorrow.

Here's the lowdown. It's MvDP vs WVA, head to head for the first time. Those two aside, there's nobody who stands out as an obvious contender, with the possible exception of Mads Pedersen and the rest of the Visma Lease a Bike team. 🤣

Do we think they will wait as far as the Boonenberg with 81 k to go?

Slightly object to this being put in the shit small races thread but since I didn't make the effort to post the starter post I shan't complain.

50% chance of rain in the final hour, wind blowing from the south west, so cross/crossheadwind into the finale, though not super strong.

I agree, but I posted it here because your Classics thread isn’t spoilered.

You could always start a spoiler classics thread.

    It would be beneficial.

Already a few notable abandons, due to crashes, two of whom are Luke Rowe and Danny van Poppel. It’s a bit murky as they approach the launchpad of the Taaienberg.

MvDP off alone atm as WVA didn’t tackle the Taaienberg too well.

Looking at the Ineos line up for this year, you have to ask: are they phoning it in this classics season?

Even the Movistar selection looks a sight more tasty.
