The two ‘right of centre’ Parties managed a total of 18.3% of the vote between them. No idea where the Independent guy who came second sits on the political spectrum but if Galloway, the artist formally known as the Labour candidate and the Lib Dems with a total of 54.4% of the share had a bad time I’m not sure what it says for the Righties. I think from a Labour point of view it would have been worse had their former candidate won.

He's splitting the left wing vote, so all good.

That's not the point though, you're more likely to see Elvis riding the Loch Ness monster that see a Tory win in Rochdale.

Broadly the split will be analogous to laser ablating a new microns off a plaque at the top of the Eiffel Tower.
If I were you I'd worry more about the Monster Raving Loonies splitting the Tory vote.

They've already done it. It's just nice to see Labour getting the same treatment.

It didn't split the left wing vote: they all went to CatMan. Labour didn't contest the seat.

So the bloke who Labour disowned (but stood anyway as it was too late to remove him) wasn't left wing at all?

He is. He was fourth behind the Conservatives. Not sure that's much of a split. More the left wing vote just transferring to Galloway. There's only one Galloway so I doubt Starmer is losing much sleep. He gets another chance in Blackpool thanks to the steady supply of by-elections.

Does feel like there were several outcomes that would have been worse for labour, and few that would have been better.
The Tories or reform winning the seat would suggest the polls were completely wrong.
The labour party ex candidate winning would be completely embarrassing.
The only result that would be better for labour would be the independent that came second winning, or inventing a time machine such that they could have fixed the issues with their own candidate.

It wasn’t exactly a success for the Tories either. Their vote share dropped by 19% despite Labour having no official candidate and the Party their supporters are most likely to defect to, Reform, also having a small drop in their vote share.

It seems fairly clear that the public view on the Gaza war is not reflected by either of the main parties, so while it might dent Labour support, I don't think it will help the Conservatives either.

I think it's dangerous to assume there's one view

The two different letters sent to different people in the constituency is a marvel of targeted marketing.
One says "I will bring back Primark to Rochdale, no grooming gangs, no trans, Make Rochdale Great Again ", the other says "A'Salaam o Aleukum, Keir Starmer is a top supporter of Israel, stand with Palestine".

To clarify, the majority view has been fairly well polled.

Sunak currently giving a lectern speech which basically says we are doing what we should be doing.
I suppose it is a beginning...

Parliament passed that there should be a ceasefire though.
The interesting one for me is who people have most sympathy with. That's a fair bit more split.

Has anybody on here ever been to Rochdale.

So it did split the left wing vote then.

No but my grandad was born there I believe (certainly grew up there).

Yes a few times. Father was born there. Not sure how it is relevant?

Especially when the constituency includes a lot of rural area.

Why would you want to go there?

I was just curious that’s all.

Seems the late MP was very well thought of.

I think it’s saying that millennials are late Boomers II the sequel. Facing similar challenges to the babies of the early sixties.
