What MTB for newish old rider

in MTB buying advice

Hello all, looking for some advice please. I'm sure it's been asked a million times before. So I'm a 40 something 6'4 guy who wants to get back into biking. It's been years but with all the bikes on offer these days just seeing if anyone could advise. Got a budget of £800 ish and seen various bikes, trek 7, cube attention and now a merida big nine 60... being a tall rider these all come in xxl but I will mainly be using it on the road or light footpaths. I've seen I cam change the tyre to more road tyres but any advise on a bike please?

    Partner and I have Trek Marlin 6s, pretty pleased with them, used for forest track riding , bikepacking and we take them with us on the MH. I like that they have rear rack and mudguard eyelets which makes them more versatile.
