Is Cannondale Smartsense useful?

I just bought a Cannondale Synapse Carbon 3L and it happened to come with something called "Smartsense" to control the lights.
On option or more expensive models, it is fitted with a radar that is supposed to alert you that something is behind... I am not bothered about this because a little mirror does at least as good a job

However, I went for a ride of about 2 hours and the battery was flat out at the end (fully charged to start with).
I thought it was supposed to turn on only under poor lighting condition... but it was on full time.
It's also supposed to indicate when you brake... but since it was on all along I doubt it did indicate much.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is it simply an expensive glorified set of lights?

Slight improvement today. Cycled ~3hrs and it looks like I managed to get the lights to come on only on shaded sections.
Still had only 25% battery left after 3 hours...

I think that my Nestling lights (costing below £20) would go on for 2 or 3 times that on blinking mode...
