Garmin Edge 840 or 1040

Hi all- I’m interested to know any owner opinions on the new edge 840 versus the 1040. I’m currently using an 810 from way back, which is still good, but I like the idea of the climb pro feature. Is the 1040 worth it for the extra screen real estate- or is it really massive and the 840 is a better proposition?Also, will I need to replace my k-edge mount (suspect the 1040 would be too big). Thanks for any feedback.

If you get an 840, you'll be paying full retail price with no discount at all. If you get a 1040, you can get at a small discount, bringing it just above the price of the 840 (£480 v £450).

For that reason alone, at this moment in time I'd get the 1040, though in time both will get discounted much more, in which case the 840 unless you really need the larger screen.

FWIW I've had a 1000 and the size isn't that big - did not look out of place even tucked in the middle of TT bars.

Thanks for the answers both. I hadn’t appreciated they were quite as new as they are. Maybe I’ll hold off for a couple of months and try to take a look at both of them at the shop. Always tricky to get a proper idea online.

DC Rainmakers reviews are up for the 840, it includes a picture of the sizes of a variety of computers including the 1040 for comparison.

DCRainmaker was asked this question and advised to go for the 1040 if similarly priced and, in his review, Shane Miller advises to wait before buying the 840. Implies there are the usual bugs and issues which need ironing out.

Tbh i would say go for the 1040 if desperate or if you can wait, give it a couple of months and see if the early bugs have been sorted in the 840.

The1040 has beta firmware that gives it the on the fly Climb Pro feature of the 540 and 840.

I'm a little miffed that they're not bringing it to the 1030, but not surprised.

If you are happy to use the climb pro feature with a downloaded route only rather than on the fly it's worth considering a 1030 or 1030plus which can now be found with big discounts over the 1040.

I went to a 1030 plus from an 820 and have been really impressed, the battery lasts for ages and it's been faultless with no obvious glitches in the year or so I've been using it.

Thanks very much for all the feedback and advice. I plumped for the 1040, and the difference coming from the 810 is stark. Great display, and the climb pro on the fly feature is neat. Expensive for sure, but very nice bit of kit.

I'll' cover your 810 and lower you to 500 from even further back!

Not sure it's working reliably though. I appear to be slower than when I bought it ten years ago.

I retired my 500 last week due to battery life issues (only lasts about 1hr) and replaced with a 530 which I picked up for £100.

To be honest I don't use many of the technical functions, I just look at speed, time, HR, distance etc.

What's great is that it syncs with my phone rather than cable and it also updates my training loads with my Forerunner 245 so I can keep track of everything.

I should do some more route planning, now that it's so easy.

Remote synching is good. I’ve got that on my running watch. (Fenix 5s).
