Stage 8: Dole to Lausanne, 186.3km

Start Time: 13-05

The 8th stage of Le Tour travels from Dole to Lausanne. So, the race starts in France and finishes in Switzerland. The puncheurs who specialise in explosive efforts should relish a short and steep climb that’s new to the Tour, as the route planners have inserted what is a revival of one of the more famous hill climbs in cycling history, À Travers Lausanne, last held in 2001.

Dole is the place where Louis Pasteur, developer of the first vaccines, was born two hundred years ago. The town hosted two starts of a Tour de France stage until now. The last time was in 2017. The race went to Station des Rouses, where Lilian Calmejane took the spoils. Lausanne saw the first Tour de France stage finish in 1948 with a Gino Bartali triumph, but the last two victories here have gone to Dutch riders.

The Climbs:

Following three midway climbs – Côte du Maréchet (2 kilometres at 5.7% Cat4), Côte des Rousses (6.6 kilometres at 5% Cat3), Col de Pétra Félix (2.4 kilometres at 1.5% Cat4) – the riders fly down into Switzerland and after roughly 15 kilometes on the flat the route begins to rise again in the last 5 kilometres.

Final Kms.

This is an irregular finish climb with 1 kilometre at 9.5% right after a short descent, while that steep section precedes a last kilometre at 3.4%.

What to Expect:

The 8th stage of the Tour de France is a hilly race with a a punchy finale in Lausanne. Perfect for the likes of Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel (were he firing on all cylinders) and Michael Matthews. The finishing climb is not unlike last year's Mur de Bretagne, so aside the fact that MvDP won there, we may also expect one or two minor time gaps among the GC protagonists.

Dole

Population: 24,800
Specialities: Franche-Comté pork, Morteau sausage, cheeses (Morbier, Comté), Franche-Comté local wines, vin jaune, vin de paille.

DOLE AND CYCLING

The birthplace of Louis Pasteur has hosted the Tour de France three times. The last time it passed through, in 2017, the peloton set off in the direction of Les Rousses, where Frenchman Lilian Calmejane scored the greatest solo success of his career. In 1939, Luxembourg rider François Neuens won from a breakaway with Dutch rider Toon Van Schelden, whereas Maurice Archambaud won the time trial between Dôle and Dijon in the afternoon. In 1992, it was from Dole that a stage set off for Saint-Gervais-Mont-Blanc where victory went to Swiss rider Rolf Jaermann. That day, his compatriot Alex Zülle didn't take the start and France’s Charly Mottet was forced to retire due to liver problems. Jaermann, who won his only Tour stage that day, overtook Pedro Delgado and Stephen Roche in the finale. Pascal Lino kept his Yellow Jersey before losing it the next day to Miguel Indurain. The town also hosted the finish of a Paris-Nice stage won by Eddy Planckaert in 1985. In 2012, the prologue of the Tour de l'Avenir took place in Dole and was won by Australian and new Giro champion, Jay McCarthy.

Comté and Vin Jeune

Km 89.1

MORBIER (Pop: 2,300)
Probably takes its name from an ancient stream that flows down from the place called la Carronnée in the centre of the village and which would have dried up in the past. It is famous for its homonymous cheese (Morbier), its Nordic ski area and its watchmaking. In the 19th century, Morbier was, along with Morez, the capital of Comté clock-making.

Morbier: when cut, you can see a dark horizontal line in the middle of its beautiful cream colour. The origin of this peculiarity comes from its first production in the modest farms (not very abundant, the curd of the morning milking was protected́ by a little soot while waiting to join the evening one to form the whole cheese)

Lausanne

Population: 147,000
Specialities: papet vaudois (Swiss potée), saucisson vaudois, perch fillets, taillé aux greubons (savoury pastry), bouchons vaudois (confectionery), Lausanne wines.

LAUSANNE AND CYCLING

Lausanne is an old acquaintance of the Tour de France, since the race has stopped here five times, the first time in 1948 for a stage won by Gino Bartali, the future winner of this edition. It was the Italian champion's sixth stage victory in the Tour and third in a row! The Grande Boucle hadn't been in town since 2000, when Erik Dekker won the stage after a long breakaway that the Dutchman was famous for. However, Lausanne's favourite race is still the Tour de Romandie, as it has been on the course nearly thirty times between 1953 and 2022. After Primoz Roglic dominated an 18km time trial along the lake in 2017, this year it was young British rider Ethan Hayter who caused a sensation by winning the prologue. The town has also hosted the Tour de Suisse on 15 occasions.

If you mean stages, no. The break merchants are starting to get desperate.

I think I (slightly accidentally) drove this route over the Jura down to my I'll fated season last winter. It had just snowed and was extremely pretty.

The Jura is a place I need to spend a lot more time in future...

Yes I've never visited but it's an area I'd like to visit with the bike - that little bit easier to drive to in a day.

Covid at UAE. Vegard Stake Laengen tested positive and is out of the race. Short term this is good news for breakaways as he's UAE's main grunt.

Yep. Break probably won't get all that much time until after the sprint, could well be bridgeable once Wout has his points
