Stage 2: Budapest – Budapest 9.2 km ITT

Saturday, May 7th, 13:00 BST

The 2nd stage of the 2022 Giro d'Italia is a 9.2 kilometres ITT in the streets of Budapest. The riders will start from Heroes’ Square and the route combines a tour of the city. They will face a short climb that will bring them to the finishing line in front of Matthias Church.

The riders head to the Danube and continue along the river. The route passes the Parliament and turns left to cross the river. After following the Danube, the riders turn right to climb to the old city on Castle Hill. The finish is at Szentháromság tér, or Holy Trinity Square.

Final Kms.
The final 1500 m run entirely uphill. Past the intermediate split, the route takes the climb leading to the castle, hitting the maximum gradient (14%) on flagstone. The route then continues at around 4%, taking in a few hairpins.

Technical Info:
A short ITT on wide and well-paved urban roads, from Pest to Buda. The route takes two U‑turns, the first one upward and the second one downward, when approaching and when leaving the river bank on the Parliament’s side.
The single intermediate time check comes late, at the base of the climb, at 7.3kms.

Favourites 2nd stage 2022 Giro d’Italia

This may well be a stage for the TT specialist, but also it's short enough to perhaps suit a puncheur who can turn in a decent, short effort against the clock.

***** Tom Dumoulin,
**** Jan Tratnik??? Matteo Sobrero
*** João Almeida, Magnus Cort Edoardo Affini
** Thymen Arensman, Alex Dowsett, Tobias Foss
* Josef Černý, Tobias Ludvigsson, Richie Porte

Szentháromság tér, or Holy Trinity Square.

This is the most significant square of the Buda Castle District. As far as its origin is concerned the Square cannot be considered old, since right until the end of the Turkish occupation (1686) a block of houses used to stand on the same site. The square as we know it today is very different from its original Baroque form.

Here stands the Old Town Hall of Buda, which lost its original function when Buda, Pest and Óbuda were united in 1873. In its cellar the Hungarian House of Wines awaits its guests with a full representation of Hungarian winemakers, and offers a pallette of services for visitors, such as wine tasting.

In the maze of aisles, you can find over 80 types of wine to sample. The most famous is Tokaij Aszu, ideal for a dessert wine.

Vargabéles: This rich dessert treat harks back to the Transylvania of the 1930s, where it was one of the signature offerings of Darvas restaurant in the city of Cluj (Kolozsvár). The dish became so renowned that Budapest-based Gundel restaurant would order same-day deliveries by air. The strudel-cake encloses fresh túró (cottage cheese) layered with thin noodles and a sweet and light and raisins-laced cream.

Eurosport were talking up Van Der Poel's chances of not just retaining pick, but winning the stage.

Seems as if wet flagstones may not factor.

Sorry about the starting order size.

I'd say it's more surprising that Dumoulin is considered the main favourite here.

Tony Martin was regarded as a favourite for virtually every prologue despite winning very few.

I would have picked MvdP if rain was going to be on the menu.
Wonder if the amount of corners doesn't still favour him. He absolutely railed the corners in the Tour TT that Pogacar won despite taking corners carefully himself.

Terrific crowds along the course. More like the Tour during everybody's holidays.

The split is fascinating as it shows who is fast up the climb.
For instance, Porte did the climb 4 seconds faster than Foss.
