Not sure a slightly tasteless joke merits slapping someone.

Thought Rock was lucky to get away with just a slap to be honest.

I doubt if Chris Rock writes his own material. Might have been better to slap whichever 'comedy' writer wrote the gag in the first place...

I think he went off script.

At least it was a lot shorter than his Bad Boys movies.
Now if Will had channeled his inner Glaswegian, that would have been something for the Luuvies to scream about.

I'm not sure someone should be able to go onstage out of the audience, hit the comedian and then not, at the very least, get thrown out of the building.

Chris Rock is about as funny as cat AIDS. I'd slap him for his comedy alone.

I suspect there was more chance of Chris Rock being ejected than the guy about to win Best Actor.

wasn't the first time CR had done it and he'd been warned before.

if someone did it to your partner in front of millions, what would you have done?

he writes his own stuff - same as Gervais at the Oscars.

    any change in feelings?

The comment (I won't call it a joke) was in very poor taste and Will was fully justified in replying to it - but he should not have gone on stage and hit Chris Rock.

He should remember that people will look to him as an example.

In that case - yes. But I'm still not sure that casual violence is the answer...

Ignore him. He's doing it for attention and by ignoring him he doesn't get the reaction he wants.

Maybe people will see it as an example that making a tastless comment about someone's partner who has a medical condition is likely to get them a smack in the mouth. If I stood in a pub addressing a guy about his wife's hair loss I would expect to get the same at the very least, why should someone feel immune because they are doing it on a stage in front of TV cameras?

    Other options available:
    - leaving (dramatic fashion with ticket tearing optional)
    - refusing to accept an oscar
    - furiously tweeting to the millions
    - mentioning in acceptance speech that some jokes simply aren't excusable
    - doing nothing
    - consulting with wife on appropriate reaction

Agreed - he knew he had the microphone coming in a few minutes, should have used that opportunity to respond.

Another would be to work in a (better) joke into the acceptance speech, preferably at Rock's expense. That does require you to be good at that sort of thing, though.

    Wow.
Talk about cutting off one's nose to spite one's face.

And as for consulting with wife, I think he did that by looking at her face.

    For real?
An audience of millions tends to guarantee plenty of attention.
As mentioned above, this isn't the first occasion for Rock.

Best response would have been for Jada to go up and give him the slap or make some comment to really cut him down to size but not many people think through the various options when someone is, as they see it, demeaning a loved one.

My first thought on seeing the slap was that it looked staged (Rock seemed to roll with it pretty well like a stage slap) but the emotions he was displaying afterwards clearly weren't.

Exactly. He's trying to get a reaction out of Smith (as he was hired to do). Why satisfy him by providing it?

Makes be wonder if the person writing that knows what a punch is (along with some people on the BBC this morning). Smith did not punch him, it was a slap.

There's definitely a Comic Relief fund raiser there, maybe have an initial premium rate poll to decide whether Gervais or Piers Morgan goes through to the final though (or just have an auction for both).

I think my favourite bit was the look on Chris Rock's face when Smith sat down - absolutely clear by his expression he was considering unloading all generic (&specific) 'your wife' material
