1x12 etc drivetrain converting

Hi guys,
I know this will have been talked about loads, but can I just ask a more general question about it.
What are the rules to this? Can you just take off all existing components that make up your 3 x 9 drivetrain for example and replace it with all 1x 11 components?
Or is it more complicated than that?
Cheers

Yes, it really is that simple.
You need cassette, chain, rear derailleur, shifter and chain set (plus maybe bb).
If you have all the tools you can do it in an hour or so.

If you want to go Shimano 1x12 you will also need a new rear hub or wheel with micro spline free hub.
