Surprised there hasn't been any chat about this, but the presentations are underway for both the men's and women's races.
Looks like they've been presenting the women's route first, but only been dipping in and out, but looks like they are hitting Alsace, and the various Ballons there, plus a finish up the gravel section on the Planche des Belles Filles.

Doesn't take a poet to realise sending the girls up the Plank of the Beautiful Ladies was a good marketing opportunity...

Looks like we may return to some 'classic' mountain stages

Lacets de Montvernier, Telegraphe/Galibier and Granon in one stage is pretty epic.

Followed by Galibier, Croix de Fer and Huez....

It's okay - a predictable, and formulaic route. Hautacam is a welcome return, though. I'd like to see them be a bit more 'radical'; how about cobbles in the final week? Or run a TT on gravel? That would/could shake things up.....but maybe they don't want that.

A few days with well over 4,000m of climbing.
They could have added in the Madeleine on the Lacets/Galibier/Granon day!
Alpe d'Huez is on Bastille Day I think they said.

Denmark is very flat - is it likely to be windy?

The stage finishing over that bridge into Nyborg must have some surely?

I haven't looked at the route at all, but I think it suits Pogacar

There are also a few stages that van Aert might be targetting.

That looks good - two proper mountain stages, a wine stage with unpaved roads, sprint stages and stages made for attacks. Starting in Paris on the day the men finish which is a good idea too.

I'll go against the grain here but I don't think cobbles should feature in the Tour. And I don't care what anyone thinks.
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Stage 12 will be the etape du Tour stage - 170 kms with 4,700m+ of climbing.
Briancon, Lauteret, Galibier, Telegraphe, Croix de Fer, Alpe d'Huez.
    Almost a reverse Marmotte.
Looks even tougher than the 2015 Etape, especially if it's hot.

Classic Day though. Will be some great photos.

(not worth watching coverage until the base of the Alpe, but...)

  • Col du Granon? Tasty!

    So. Much. Pain.

  • Up and over the Galibier in both directions on consecutive days?

Super. Pink socks at the ready.

I think if they are OK, but I think they should be later in the race. That way they give a bigger opportunity for a GC rider to gamble and lets the specialists race for them selves more. It's also less likely to eliminate stars early on. With it coming early everyone's priority is to get the team leader through safely. They are risk averse.

Geography obviously makes this difficult though

That may be true if you're only interested in who wins the race.

Plateau du belles filles and alpe d'huez again? YAWN! Does the tour designer own a pinarello and only wear black castelli?

  • Considering they rarely (2019 being the exception) stray too far from the tried and tested, this seems like a pretty decent "traditional" route with plenty of variety along the way.
I don't think that Cav will be too impressed, as after the first half of week one, the pickings for sprinters look slim.

Fair on the planche, but not on the alpe.
