Watching MOTD this morning and one of the teams had a free kick just outside the box. The defending team set up their wall but then had a player lying on the floor behind the wall facing goal. I've never seen it before but assume it is to protect from the shot that goes under the wall when they jump. Is this a new thing or have I somehow missed it previously?

It was done last season. Hadn't seen it before then.

I saw it a few times at the euros which is the first time I saw it.
It’s a reasonably common (yet rather dangerous) thing that defensive players do in ice hockey when short handed.
It’s not a static play like a football free kick but the attacking team can use their extra player to manufacture a free shot from the blue line. The defensive player will throw themselves on the ice in front of the player about to take a shot.
Don’t know if that had any influence on its adoption in football.

It's been a thing for at least 4 or 5 seasons. Steven Gerrard slid one under the wall for liverpool a few years back and after that teams often had a player lying down on free kicks against Liverpool after that.

So Spurs did ok today in the post-Kane era and Man city didn't benefit from his presence either.

Maybe Spurs should just keep him on the bench all season?

A carbon net zero football games including fans?
    Likelihood of achievement?

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Forest Green Rovers have been carbon neutral for 3 years. Different scale of support though obviously.

    Can't see it happening.

They're not going to cycle but I guess public transport gives a London derby better chance of success than most other events of that size.

bizarrely, Messi fulfills this role when required.

its probably more to do with him 4'6 rather than his lying on the ground abilities though...

Its great how the PIF is completely independent of the rulers even though the Crown Prince chairs it and another government minister is on the board.

    Completely above board.

I do wonder whether the defence industry should be held to a higher standard. Directing the outrage (faux or otherwise) towards the board of a company making bank selling to a murderous regime, rather than some football fans would seem more fair.

There wouldn't be a defence industry in this country if they didn't sell to ne'er-do-wells

There's also the risk that Newcastle might become a good team again...
