Just seen one of those weekly magazine things where you get a collectable or a bit of model you build up each week.

This one was for Eddie Stobart.

First issue is £1.99, fair enough, then £8 a week.

    140 issues!

So not only does it cost £1114 to build a model of an articulated lorry, but surely there can't be enough history or Eddie Stobart to fill 140 issues of a magazine.

Who buys this stuff? Do they ever finish it?

Would i get summoned for speeding while driving an electric vehicle at 70mph on a motorway with a 60mph limit sign posted for air quality ?

I seem to remember someone reporting that a complete "something or other" was for sale in Harrods for half the price of the magazine version. There be idiots out there.

This is an interesting concept. Noise yeh, air quality... not so sure.

They got them all over Wales now (they're 50mph though not 70mph). I assume there's science behind it.

The difference must be miniscule, and then offset by accelerating/decelerating.

Also depends how it's posted. The max speed signs you often see for sharp curves... they're not enforceable.

Not by criminal laws anyway... physics laws might have something to say (or civil, if you end up in someone's conservatory).

15% fuel saving against the current 70+mph. There's a 6% saving in just sticking to the speed limit.

I'll admit I haven't read the article, but I always thought the saving would be less without enforcing the reduced speed limit for significant and continuous stretches of motorway... otherwise there is the decelerating and accelerating to take into account.

I would have thought you get less accelerating and decelerating in a 50mph limit because the speed difference between the fast and slow vehicles would be less.

You've seen how people drive on motorways, right?

As far as I can tell, most do whatever speed they fancy until they see a repeater sign and panic about getting caught over the limit.

Much as I dislike the long 50 zones (M4 past Reading springs to mind), they do seem to be very smooth if they are fairly long. If they are short then sure, you're absolutely right.

Eventually we will get to average speed cameras on any road which has sliproads.

That's just an advisory sign though, the same as a matrix sign on the motorway (excluding the actual red circle regulatory ones). Theoretically you could get stopped for driving without due care and attention if you ignore them and it could be used against you if you ignore them and crash.

The 50mph limit in place around Newport stretches for about 7 or 8 miles so fairly significant although in peak hours doing 50 along there has always been an ambitious hope. The stretches further west on the M4 are a good few miles too and it's all covered by average speed cameras although it was reported on the news yesterday that they are only starting issuing fines from today (a later date for the Newport stretch that hasn't been in operation for so long). The biggest issue is that with all lanes travelling at the same speed it can get difficult to get over from lane 3 when you reach your junction.

Oh, and the other issue is you end up with HGVs driving millimetres off your bumper - they seem incapable of understanding you are driving to the limit and as they are able to drive at the same speed they won't give any space so I tend to go in lane 3 out of their way.

Every time I am on one of these 50 stretches, the majority will be doing 50 or a hair over (much better adherence than to a 70 limit with normal cameras), and then you'll get the odd person just completely ignoring it going something over 60.

    This always intrigues me.

They don't understand how average speed cameras work. Is my take.
