  • The Belgie Boys
  • I still don't know much about the hellingen, they're used in Brabaants Pijl I think, but I've never paid that much attention to it... Any guides about?

  • What's the point in under 23 races?

What's the point in under 23 races?

Isn't it a throwback to that being an age where you couldn't realistically compete in the pro ranks? Even Merckx didn't win his first Tour until he was 24, Fignon won his first when he was 23, Hinault was 24. Even Ullrich was 24 when he won and he was regarded as a young buck when he broke through the year before.

Now, for some reason, that isn't the case and you've got Pogacar winning the Tour twice before his 23rd birthday. What we're seeing at the moment flies in the face of 100 odd years of cycling history.

While there are some riders are good very young, it's not the case for most riders. The young riders are mostly from cycling families (sons of ex pros) and have the contacts in the sport and/or get pro training from their mid teens.

Before totally junking the u23, have a read of this Emma Norsgsaard interview, where she criticises the lack of an u23 category for women.

To be serious for a sec its because it gives young people a chance to learn racing at the pointy end rather than spend years slogging around in grupettos.

For the most part it still does, apart from two or three super freaks

Good effort by Bigham. Doesn't last long though as Walscheid takes 15" out of him. Remco flying though.

Evenepoel finishes 42 seconds ahead of Bissegger - 48:31 worth about 53.5km/h I think. (WCh record currently 53.671km/h by Tony Martin in 2016)

Bigham finished 5 seconds quicker than Bjerg, for what that's worth.

The course is really highlighting the beauty of the area with all the industrial units. Crowds are brilliant though.
  • Is it just me or is there proportionally more of a focus on the bigger names in comparison to previous WCh time trials?

Hayter pushing a huge gear there. Third fastest at the finish so far.

    What cadence was that? 80rpm?

I've not seen such big crowds for a championship ITT since London 2012.

Only a second between the top two (WVA / Ganna) at the second check.
