Lightish weight carbon climbing bike with discs and integrated cables?

Evening,

my Synapse Di2 has gone to a good home, and although I was virtually set on a Scott Addict RC, I have not rushed into anything, and will consider other options.

Ideally I would like fully integrated cables (Like the Addict has), and would also consider 2nd hand.

Makes I would like to avoid are:
Trek
Specialized
Giant
Apollo ;)

No scientific reason, just not makes I like, in the same way there are lot of car makes I would never consider buying.

Wheels not really a consideration, as they would be changed anyhow.

Any bike suggestions?

Budget would be up to 5K ideally, 6 at an absolute push, but would have to be something really special to reach that amount.

I appreciate this may not currently exist, and I may need to wait a year or two.

Thanks

I'd buy a Sarto Seta frame with the £5000, and keep saving...

Merida Reacto would fit the bill as would a Specialissima

What are defining as lightish and why the integrated cables as that typcially means heavy stems etc?

Will check all of the above out - thanks for the suggestions.

Lightish - I suppose sub 8kg, with the option to further reduce weight with a lightweight saddle and wheels etc.

I appreciate with discs and likely a battery or batteries it's not going to be featherlight.

The desire for fully integrated cables is that I just think it makes the front end of the bike look so uncluttered and clean - I realise they will be more of a pain for home mechanics.

And there's no cable rub :D

Ribble have some interesting options, although no 12 speed is mentioned.

Plus they have a custom colours option, but not as many different colours as they could have done.

Spending 6k+ on a Ribble though, I think I would struggle with sadly.

OP, I know you mention you would prefer to avoid some makes but the specialized aethos ticks all the boxes you are wanting, so might be worth considering.

A couple of others to look at are Canyon (good luck getting one any time soon though) and possibly the wiggle Vitus range.

  • I'd add the Ridley Helium SLX to that list also.

Not sure if you want Di2 or not, but an Ultegra Di2 is just over £6k, while mechanical Ultegra is just under £5k...

I'll check out the Spesh (Never say never) and once upon a time I did want a Canyon, but the volume of horror stories I have heard has definitely put me off them.
Plus didn;t they stop selling to the UK, or maybe I imagined it or it was temporary, or another company - ah, I think it was Rose bikes - that's another one to check actually - if they are selling to us again that is.

Quite like the look of the Vitus bikes - am I correct in assuming it's a once great bike name that has been bought up by Wiggle/CRC and used on a specific bike range?
Not suggesting it's a bad thing by any means, just curious.

Liking the look of the Ribble SL-R - but it's an aero bike and not what I need :/

I'd add the Ridley Helium SLX to that list also.

Yeh I think canyon temporarily suspended sales to UK after brexit but have resumed now (Rose bikes haven't though). Definitely worth considering, although availability may be an issue - same across most brands at the moment though.

I love my specialized bikes and the aethos gets brilliant reviews. The only negative is it isn't as stiff as the tarmac, but then it's designed purely for climbing and lightness.

I don't know much about Vitus other than what I've read and heard from someone i know who has just bought one and seems very impressed although complained that he needed to adjust a fair bit when delivered, including things like the headset - which hadn't been tightened. Spec wise, you can't beat the value for money.

I think you'd struggle to spend £6k on that bike seeing as the top end Dura ace Di2 model with aero handlebars is £5k... I am sure you would spend the extra £500 and get custom colour mind.

I've got a more modest SL model and honestly the quality was way better than I expected - the paint, the build, the components, everything. I bought as a year round trainer I didn't mind riding in crappy conditions but it's far too good for that.

Not sure I would be willing to wait the 6 months or so current delivery times but from a quality perspective it won't disappoint ( & you'll basically get Dura ace Di2 for the price of most brands Ultegra Di2)

Couple of lesser known brands doing open mold type frames that might offer decent value: Pearson bikes and Handsling.

Yup it's 5.5 with custom paint, but I'd want new wheels, so would end up about 6.5.

Would you consider buying a frame and building up yourself? I think you get more bang for your buck that way in the main.

I would have done in the past, having built both the CR1s, but looking more recently at parts prices\availability, and also my inexperience with hydraulics, all of that internal cabling I am after, and the fact I don't have as much spare time these days, it seems like it might be a struggle.

I did have a look at 2020 Mitchelon Scott race frames, but thanks to leaving the EU, it's an extra £1500 or so on top of what it would have been, and that was without any wheels, which isn't an issue in itself, but the frame and groupset price sat at around 6.5k, and there were a fair few scrapes, chips and rubs as you might expect.

I am a great fan of the Ridley Helium. I have had two. I have no imagination, All this about wheels that roll well and frames being stiff, is buli shit to me but I find a Ridley has a bit of magic in the ride that i have not found anywhere else. You need to ride one.

Thanks Les, I will certainly do some investigation.

Eeek, I have just dropped Factor a couple of queries about the O2 Vam....

One part of their website has ready built bikes, but only with SRAM, another one has a form to submit a qoute, and you can leave things off such as saddle, wheels, and also choose Shimano groupsets, though presumably 11 spd.

I've dropped them a couple of queries, will see what they come back with.

I have just read about the latest Tifosi Mons bike.

Might be a shade over your limit but maybe with different kit. Do check it out.

    Sounds very light

Its only light because they chucked about £7k of AX Lightness stuff and Lightweights all over it to gain headlines

its just an average looking average lightish weight frameset at heart. 890g frameset, £2,999.

Ah or did you read about it in Cyclist that Matt mentioned?

Factor are now written off for a few reasons, not least because they couldn't be @rsed to reply to either of my carefully crafted messages :D

With Tifosi you're also paying £3k for an open mould frameset from some bloke in Wiltshire......

You could get a very nice Basso for that probs.....
