Centennial Road World Championships, Flanders - 19-26 September 2021 *SPOILERS*

Yeah, the history of pro winners and rainbow jerseys is 6 years shy, but still...

Thought I'd start this before team selection etc somehow ends up in the SSR thread ;)

    No Hannah Barnes?

And how many spots do the Elite women's and Men's team actually have?

I'm assuming it's not everyone they are taking who will get a spot, team of 8 would be great, but it seems unlikely they have qualified for that many places?

    Mixed relay looks interesting.

I think that's the full team. Surprisingly GB are ranked 4th in the Men's rankings (12th in the Women's)

I wasn't expecting to see Cav there, but given how lean people comeenting on the ToB said he looked, and the breakaway ride across the Penninies I'd think he has known he was going for a while.

It'll also be interesting to see how Mr Aero goes in the TT.
  • Looking at the men's rankings, GB doesn't have top-tier GC/one-day hitters at Pog/WVA level,* but a big bunch of riders with a wide spread of high-level wins between them. It should also be noted that some of last year's belated results are apparently staying the full 12 months (like Carthy's Vuelta).

[* Pidcock may be one before long]

Hayter must be handy in the TT then? Really a very versatile rider it seems.
  • I can't get my head round Bigham in the ITT. Can't see any result that would justify it. If you think Dowsett has had enough chances at the worlds the Archibald is in good nick and had a 2nd by 1 second only a couple of weeks back. Especially since Bigham DNF the Tour of Britain with a bad back.

He was on for a top 2 or 3 in the Algarve ITT before he crashed (Asgreen closed hard and would have won it regardless). Possible medal contender in a few years if his endurance continues to improve.

    Men's elite route.
  • Can anyone see past the Belgians?

In the men's RR, strong team: Wout van Aert, Remco Evenepoel, Tiesj Benoot, Victor Campenaerts, Tim Declercq, Yves Lampaert, Jasper Stuyven, Dylan Teuns

But obviously they can be beaten - the Danish team looks pretty much as strong (taken from the Vikings thread): Kasper Asgreen, Magnus Cort, Mikkel Honoré, Michael Valgren, Mads Pedersen, Andreas Kron, Mads Würtz Schmidt, Mikkel Bjerg

Then there's MVDP came back yesterday, Pidcock was well in the mix in the spring, the reigning champion. The race is a really exciting prospect, which isn't always the case.
  • If Pidcock had prepared well, then he'd a contender. He's not looked like doing so since winning the Olympic XC race, Matt Brammeier admits:
"Tom had quite a big push up to the Olympics and that took quite a bit out of him, emotionally and physically. Going into the Vuelta was an unknown and he’s not worn out. He’s calling and messaging me every day but we just think that he’s not in the right shape to go and nail his hat to the wall and say he wants a win."

He went well in the one Vuelta stage where he got in the break. Surprised Doull isn't in the team, it looks fairly inexperienced other than Rowe and the Swifts.

Fair enough. DQS best chance of having the WC jersey next season do seem to rest away from the Belgian team tho. Can't see Lefevre being happy with Tim D, Remco and Yves helping put the jersey on the back of a Jumbo rider, in a Flanders WCs.

Assume Senechal will be in the French team supporting Julian A.

Outside the time limit in Paris Roubaix juniors in 2018 was his last race on cobbles I think

Do Druivenkoers - Overijse and Brussels Cycling Classic not count?

Well good for Remco then, because there will be no proper cobbles in the worlds either.
