Socks

hello peps,
I fancy a new pair of cycling socks to replace my running socks which as a hole in it and oil stains. Please could someone recommend where to buy a pair of socks for road cycling? I fancy spashing out as compared to a good road bike it is alot cheaper. I'm hoping to use them in the london to brighton cycle ride.

I bought a pack of 7 pairs of black socks for £5 from Sainsbury's.

Save your money and wear, um, socks.

Or simply use Elastoplast on your shins instead of socks.

I'd probably spend as long as possible getting to Brighton.

Its blimmin' ridiculous. And people buy this stuff.

Fair play to companies being able to make, what 500% profit on a pair of socks but wtaf are people doing buying this stuff?

I pretty much buy any sports related socks on amazon or at Decathlon. Don't need to be cycling specific.

I have had Pongo (in the sale) amongst other socks (Planet X, Ale, Endura, Defeet), but the best socks out there in my honest opinion, are GripGrab Lightweight SL Socks.

Prior to them I always just thought cycling socks were by the by.

These ones are the goldilocks ones I guess, as some are too thick, and some are way too thin, where as these just feel luxurious, comfortable, breathe well, and come up really nicely after a run through the washing machines.
They seem to use different thickness material across the sock, including some more meshy areas - they work for me from Spring to Autumn.

Just to add, I bought some Endura socks that also have coolmax material in them, and they were nothing like as good as these, and have been regulated to normal sock duty as a result :D

LOADS of colours, and 2 different lengths - I prefer the longer ones.

One thing of note, they do come up a bit large, so for me as a UK size 10, Medium is perfect.

They aren't cheap at £15 a pair, but I did recently manage to nab some from Tredz in a sale at a more palatable £8 a pair.
However if you are planning a long ride, and you said you wanted to splash out, for me they really justify the cost.

These are the longer ones I prefer:

Shorter ones I can't see the point of:

You can get 6 pairs of these for £11 at Sports Direct.

    Six Pairs.

I'm not a "pro" or even terrribly, anally serious about my cycling but £15 for a single pair of socks seems to be about £12 too much!

Don't want to step on anyone's toes (😉) but is wearing sweat absorbent cotton socks really that good an idea?
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

I'm always amazed by people's capacity to be surprised that expensive things exist.
  • I bought some DHB Socks from Wiggle (https://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-sock), £6 a pair which I think isn't too bad really. Most running socks I buy are like £12 a pair but they have more padding, etc.

The DHB ones are just basic socks, quite thin but they fit well and are comfortable.

Not surprised they exist, but amused that people don't buy something just as good for a lot, lot less.

All I need in a pair of cycling socks is that they offer arch support. I do have arch support in my shoes, but I can tell when wearing old/poorly fitting socks on long rides.

There are always bargains to be had. Prendas worth a note, but they're slowly reducing stocks to only offer caps in future, if I recall correctly.

It's small change in the scheme of cycling things. Personally I probably fall somewhere in the middle - I'd spend maybe £10 on some nice cycling specific socks or some merino winter socks - more than that is getting a bit rich - I still prefer something a bit nicer than a pack of sports direct specials though.

sports direct is owned by ashley, so I personally would not be spending any of my money in there.

Cotton is highly breathable unless it's wet, so I think it depends on just how sweaty your feet are. I'd prefer it to £17 nylon socks that's for sure.

Can usually be found on eBay or Wiggle etc for a decent price.

Plenty of wild & wacky designs as well if that's your thing.

Just checked and you’re right re Prendas - they’re just focussing on caps. Real shame as their retro jerseys were really good.

Huge shame, bought some kit from when when I was first starting out and more recently, really helpful with sizing queries and returns when required.

Reading that it looks like leaving the EU and the pandemic has hit them hard :-(

Are people genuinely surprised that some people buy items for a certain price when a lower cost alternative that fulfills the same remit exists?

Do those same people drive either very old 2nd hand cars, something like a Dacia, or something that is REALLY economical regarding fuel consumption, is cheap (or free) to tax, and cheap to insure and service?

Presumably they also do not have a carbon bike, and wouldn't need anything above a claris groupset on the steel or aluminium bike they do own?
