Just watched The Racer. Should have known better than to watch a film based on a sport I know a bit about as you always see the gaping problems with the details and the action scenes always look rubbish as they've brought in a bunch of amateurs who may have some experience but just aren't believable. Ending was stupid too.

I've always felt there is a good cycling film to be made from the EPO era but this unfortunately wasn't it.

The 12th Man - On Amazon.
A Norwegian true story about a symbol of hope during WWII with English subtitles.
If you ever think you are having a bad day, think again.
I do believe I got a bit of dust in my eyes towards the end.

PS - Why oh why do film makers remove all peril from a film by showing an introduction before going back to the story? We know he lives, not a plot spoiler, obviously. 🤬
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

    Riders of Justice

    Retfærdighedens Ryttere Danish.

I’ll watch anything with Mads Mikkelsen, terrific actor and was pleased to find this action comedy, revenge drama but not with your typical revenge plot. Brutal, touching and hilarious. Superbly acted, particularly by Nikolaj Lie Kaas of department q fame (Danish crime drama trilogy, also well worth a watch) Minor dip in the last 15mins but still a level above the tosh I’ve seen this year.

Finally watched Dream Horse the other day. I'd originally planned watching it when it was due to be released at the cinema last April as I was a "background artist" (easiest £100 I've ever earned) but it was a victim to the pandemic , then had a very limited release later in the year before the full cinema release in April this year but couldn't find time to watch it.

It's a typical 'based on a true story' British film along the lines of Calendar Girls / Military Wives / Fisherman's Friend about the racehorse Dream Alliance. Enjoyable storyline, decent cast but some dodgy Welsh accents and fairly formulaic / clichéd plot. My scene made the cut but camera angles meant I wasn't visible. I suspect that was down to Damien Lewis feeling threatened by my acting talent and insisting they hid me out of the way.

In very cliched fashion I am a big Tarantino fan but only just managed to finish watching once upon a time in Hollywood and I’m quite disappointed.

Maybe I missed a lot of context around the Manson murder ( I had to look it up afterwards).

It could also be I had to watch it in 3 different sittings.

None of it really grabbed me. I liked bits but it didn’t hang together for me.

    Baby Driver.

Entertaining stuff with a fantastic soundtrack.

Enjoyed the performance of the lad in the lead role, and there were some good turns in the supporting cast including Kevin Spacey before he became persona non grata.

I don't think he has ever reached the standards he set with Pulp Fiction.

I preferred the Kill Bill movies tbh.

I fell asleep during Django Unchained, tried to watch it again and just couldn't, i thought it was rubbish. I don't think i've seen any of his work since.

Inglorious Barstewards was pretty decent among his more recent offerings.
  • The Pebble And The Boy. Crowd funded British road trip movie about a young guy taking his dad's ashes to scatter in Brighton on his dad's Lambretta. On the way he meets some of his dad's old mates, some middle aged comedy mods, finds out stuff about his dad and meets a girl.

Despite terrible reviews if you can overlook the fact it's very amateurish in places I quite enjoyed it. The main characters are well acted (unlike some of the other characters) and I liked the soundtrack.

IMDB have it as 8.4/10 and i've just read that Mani makes an appearance, so cheers for that, might give it a whirl.

Just watched Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy again as it was on BBC4 just now.

Seen it before, but I guess I'd forgotten just how bloody brilliant it is.

    What a film.

So understated, just reliant on a great story, a brilliant cast and performances.

Guilty on Netflix. A Hollywood film that most certainly isn't a Hollywood film.
As tense as you are going to get, yet zero action and zero special effects.
Not a pleasant watch, but compelling.

I watched Father of the Bride for the first time in years whilst pottering about the house on Saturday. A proper daft and silly film and Steve Martin goofing brilliantly.
I don't know if it's because I have a 12 year old daughter who is growing up fast, but there were moments when the room became increasingly dusty....

Going Wednesday. First one this century I have seen on opening night or a preview screening. Watched Spectre after an overnight flight back from New York (and fell asleep!).

    The new Bond film.

If you like Bond, I think you'll love this.

Watched this now. Hard to talk about it without spoilers but had plenty of Bond tradition (spectacular car chases, exotic locations, gadgets, baddies living on secret islands with submarine pens) plus a few nods to old movies (particularly OHMSS) but also a few surprises.

For me the Craig era has never surpassed Casino Royale, this was a solid film but probably in the middle of his 5 behind Casino Royale and Skyfall but considerably better than Spectre and, in particular, Quantum of Solace. Not the 5 star film quite a few reviews are saying though.

    Watched Arrival to-and-from work.

Was good. I slightly struggle with the alien/monster type format, in that the anticipation is always better than when you encounter the alien, but nonetheless, of the genre it was a good one.

I quite liked that the focus was quite narrow.

Completely agree. The love interest lacked gravitas in my eyes, although cute as a button (my god that nose 😍) Bond’s latest girl lacked the acting chops to really tug the heart strings. They almost smashed it out of the park but still brill and thoroughly enjoyable. I Miss Daniel Craig already, best Bond for me, really added some depth to the role and a hard act to follow.

Rami Malek was decidedly average as a Bond villain but didn’t detract too much from the film.

No not that one elbow. Ana de Armas was great in the film for all of the 15mins she was in it and would have been a much more believable main love interest. Freakishly pretty girl

No Time To Die. Thought it was garbage. Non stop action to the extent you just want it to give you a break, action scenes that cross the line from spectacular to ridiculous as Bond strolls through automatic gunfire without bothering to take cover, weak plot, a villain so weak he would have been more at home in the Austin Powers films all leaves a feeling that they have run out of ideas.

They set the bar high with Skyfall, fell a little short with the follow up but this one is the worst Bond I've ever seen.

Thought Spectre was worse and Quantum was the worst Bond film for me, especially following on from Casino Royale that I felt was the best.

I guess I'm going to have to update the poster in my office now too as it has images of all the publicity photos of every Bond film up to and including Spectre.

I rewatch them regularly as I'm a Bond geek with a limited edition DVD collection. I still think Quantum is the worst ever (I don't like any of the Moore era much but get that it was being played tongue in cheek). Casino Royale is the best from any era. Some of the very early ones make me cringe - I rewatched Thunderball recently (best theme tune) and there's no way some of the 'love' scenes would be made today.

For what it's worth I think Lazenby gets unfairly criticised. OHMSS is the best of the 60s Bond movies, I do prefer Connery but Lazenby wasn't as bad as people make out and way better than Moore.
