Stage 6: Grotte di Frasassi – Ascoli Piceno (S.Giacomo) 160 km

Thursday, May 13th, 12.35 CEST

Running almost entirely through the inland, across the Apennines, the stage is demanding in both course and profile. At 160 kilometres long, it features 3,400 vertical metres of climbing in several ascents, including two categorised climbs. The main obstacles along the course are the ones typically found in urban areas. The final climb is approx. 15 km long.

The Climbs:
At km 77, the road will go up to the first categorized climb of the day, a very serious one.
Forca di Gualdo: GPM2, 10.4 km at 7.4%

Forca di Presta: GPM3, 4.8 km at 4.2%

S.Giacomo: GPM2, 15.5km at 6.1%

The climb is actually the longest MTF of this Giro. It features a first 10 km section at 5.5% average, before ramping up for the last 5 km at 7.6%.

Final Kilometres
The final kilometres are entirely uphill. Past Ascoli Piceno, the route rises steadily for 10kms at around 5% up to Colle San Marco, before ramping up for the last 5 km at 7.6% all the way to the finish, on tarmac road.

What to expect:
The route is demanding, but not extremely tough. Chances are that the breakaway will get some leeway and fight for the stage honours.
However should a GC rider feel like testing his rivals on the San Giacomo and we will see a different scenario develop.

Grotte di Frasassi

The village of Genga is a small medieval castle built on the rock located in the heart of the Marche. Genga owes its national and international notoriety to Frasassi Caves, destination every year of hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world.

Genga is known throughout Italy for its long tradition of salami factories and norcinerie: a past ritual carried out today by the Salumificio di Genga.

The proximity to the Jesini hills means that even in the Genga area the typical Verdicchio is widespread, a still white wine that today represents the symbol of Marche oenology. The first written testimonies on verdicchio date back to the 16th century. Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is a DOC wine produced in the Marche region in the province of Macerata and Ancona.

Ascoli Piceno (San Giacomo)

Ascoli Piceno is an Italian town of 46 677 inhabitants. The historic center is built almost entirely in travertine and in it there is the Renaissance. The city is located in the southern part of the Marche region and is 28 km from the Adriatic Sea. In the confluence area between the Tronto river and the Castellano torrent , surrounded on three sides by mountains , including the Ascension mountain , the San Marco hill and the mountain of flowers . Its territory is surrounded by two protected natural areas : the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga national park to the south and the Monti Sibillini national park to the north -west.

The city is also known for the Ascoli olive , a gastronomic specialty born in Ascoli Piceno and widespread throughout the Italian territory and beyond national borders.
The dishes that most represent the local cuisine and gastronomy are olives all'ascolana and fried all'ascolana: both owe their name to the city. The tender green olives, after being pitted and filled with a soft mixture of mixed meat, are breaded and fried. The fried all'ascolana is a dish that consists of lamb chops, artichokes, Ascoli olives and fried cream (cremini).

Surely Carthy is worthy of a place amongst the favourites?

These threads are your annual reminder that whilst a lot of Italian food and drink is beautiful, they don't half eat some shite too

It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Sure, but I felt that of those GC boys seemingly going well, he didn't have quite the same kick.
I could also add Ciccione to the list and now that Landa is out, a decent bet for the break, who can climb, Gino Mäder.

I would still most likely not have picked today's winner!

How long do we think it'll take for the break to be established, tough one to control for Israel/GC Teams surely?

Some hard work involved in getting into the breakaway today.
A few bigger names trying today, including some from my list of stage favourites.

Still messy. Peloton lined out, and attacks going from the break.

Big enough break if they work hard for it to stick - plenty teams in there, so ISN on their own not liking it.

Put Ganna on the front of the break and it's away for the day surely.

There's going to be some tired domestiques by the end today and possibly some struggling to hit the time limit.

Looks like that's it for now.
Aside from Gino Mader, there's nobody who can't be held on a long leash

    Come on Bauke!

Peloton on a loo break, so it's 6 or 8 away.

    Being given very little leeway

Edit - ignore that, best part of 4 minutes (I was listening to the commentary and it sounded like they'd been pegged with a few seconds, think they were talking about the potato chase by Mollema).

Rai have forgotten to put a Euro in the metre again and Hannah Barnes has turned up to give her twopence worth.

Mollema chased for a while and thankfully for my PTP hopes has made it across

Mader is virtual pink as the group has approx 5 minutes lead

  • Horrible conditions right now, although it looks lovely at the finish.

So, every time it rains, the pictures break down. Much like some of their cars.

It's Hannah Walker, not Hannah Barnes.

Oh, okay. I heard Rob H call her Hannah and I assumed it was her.
    I can't recall Hannah Walker.

She's Chris Walker's daughter, I believe. Rode as a pro for a couple of years:

Conditions aren't that bad now, don't know why the pictures are so bad. Got them back for the descent but breaking up.
