Chainring problem or something else?

There is a horrible grinding noise from my commuter/turbo bike at the moment, but while it's far from universal on the big ring (some gears seem to run smoothly), it's constant on the small chainring and even present when riding easily. I don't have any problems shifting between gears, but I wonder if it's the chainring that is done?

If it helps, as I've got the bike upside down, while the chain fits snugly on the chainring from perhaps 12 o'clock to 2 o'clock, there is visible daylight from 3 through to 6 o'clock.

The next question, is if it is the chainring, are there any consequences to riding it as it is? While I'm pretty much resigned to replacing it and the chain (possibly the cassette) when I can, I won't have access to a bike shop for a week.
