Podcast Recommendations Thread

Have just started into

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/m000tsjy

"The Northern Bank Job
Radio 4
It was the biggest bank heist in British and Irish criminal history. Belfast writer Glenn Patterson has unfinished business with the 2004 Northern Bank robbery."

and would recommend

Note- while, as soon becomes obvious, the tale is intrinsically linked to its location, no interest or anything more than a basic knowledge of Northern Ireland is required

“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!

Not so much a recommendation as everyone has different tastes but here is a list of ones I follow for you to check out and ignore. 😉 In no particular order...

    Kermode & Mayo
    Bradley Wiggins
    Peter Crouch
No Such Thing As A Fish
    Newscast
    Sh**gged. Married. Annoyed.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

'The Rest is History' is good.
1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

    Oh, where to start.

The Infinite Monkey Cage is brilliant - Brian Cox and Robin Ince with great guests on science topics, with humour also.

Atheltico Mince - incredibly funny podcast from Bob Mortimer and some bloke from Sunderland. Initially started as a footy podcast, but it's not. Its lots of characters and sketches and insanity.

Anything from Louis theroux - Grounded being the most recent.

The long-running Adam Buxton podcast is funny and insightlful with great, wide ranging guests. If you want to get into it, start with the ones with Joe Cornish or Louis Theroux (they all went to school together).

Dan Snow's history hit - for short form podcasts on history (does seem to have a WW2 content in particular)

If you liked the show Scrubs, then Fake Doctor's Real Friends is really funny. Its from Zach Braff and Donald Faison who starred in Scrubs and they're best friends in real life also. It's also a podcast about the show only nominally, the rest is just shooting the shoite.

Jools and Jim's Joyride is quite good, Jim Muir (Vic Reeves) and Jools Holland - supposed to be about modes of transport and travel, but again it's just talking bollox with a guest.

Science Shambles is another good science podcast with Robin Ince (no Coxy this time).

If you're into football (across Europe) then The Totally Football Show with James Richardson (him of C4s Football Italia show from the 90s) is the best.

I don't listen to music anymore in the car or around the house (doing chores etc) i listen to podcasts, so these are my "go-to's"

^ Agree with a lot of these.

Add The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry, a light hearted examination of questions raised on things natural, scientific, medical etc, Drs Adam Rutherford and Hannah Fry.

Guardian Football Weekly is pretty good, quality presenters.

More or Less, Behind the Stats, short and irregular, examines numbers being reported in the meejah. So lots in past year related to C19.

Life in the Peloton, by Mitch Docker. Some episodes via the Cycling Podcast stream, his Talking Luft quick fire Q&A are separate.

The Bugle, Andy Zaltzman and a rolling cast of international copresenters. Current affairs with humour and sarcasm, and often lots of puns.

Rachman review is excellent if you are interested in foreign affairs. It's also short - 20 minutes, so no filler.

I take my hat off for anyone who can tolerate Brian Cox for more than a minute - fair play.

The "Wonders of..." Shows were watched by millions on the UK and have been shown around the world. I've been to his and Robin Ince's Christmas compendium live shows and they are brilliant.

I think you're in the minority.

If you're into history, then the Dan Carlin Hardcore History is a must have. One or two episodes a year but they re 2 hours long and a deep dive I to the subject done expertly.

The First World War series (blueprint for Armageddon) is what school history lessons SHOULD be.

For lolz, The Off Menu podcast is good, The froth...and there are a bunch of others from comedians around...

My Dad wrote a porno is now an institution

The US classics, Slow Burn, Serial etc

    Agree with Adam Buxton

    The Thought Police.
Mike Graham and Kevin O'Sullivan from Talk Radio swearing their way through an hour of their pet hates from the news of the week. It's how I imagine it would be if Stevo, David37, Coopster and me met in the pub for a few pints. Don't suppose it will delight the core demographic of Cake Stop but some people may enjoy.

    What are you looking for?

Unless you want it to give good recommendations for podcasts you will likely like (not possible) they’re all the same.

I use Spotify for most as I have a subbie anyway but the occasional podcast doesn’t make it on there like the FT podcasts.

Have said it before but their podcasts are great. All killer, no filler. Informative, insightful, high quality guests and questioning and all done in less than 20 minutes

  • The Good, The Bad and The Rugby is absolutely brilliant. They occasionally talk about Rugby but have some great guests and the old scholl drunken touring stories are hilarious. Good fun.
