Brake and derailleur cable questions

Hi all,

I have a two questions:
1- my derailleur cable has a tiny kink near the end. I indexed it beautifully and it'll work well for the first 30 miles after indexing. Then it starts slipping under torque. Do you think it's the cable kink to blame?


2- on the brake cable pics - is it time for those to be replaced? Or do they look safe to use?

    I have ridden with kinked and fraying gear cables, knowing that I was taking a risk and suffering from poor shifting, but years ago I came to the conclusion that it is not worth it.

    I'm all for not wasting stuff and for not spending money when it's not necessary, but cables are so cheap and can have such a big impact that it is not worth messing about. Replace them both.

    ^what he said. I've had a rear brake cable snap (years ago) and I almost carped my pants. Managed to steer and avoid stuff and slowly use the front. Never again.

    wot Steve said. You can get inners and outers for a tenner or less, think of them as disposable items and change at least once a year
