It's also to prevent crushing/fraying the carbon at the top of the steerer.

The only way this can happen is if the steerer was not cut short enough.
    Shoddy workmanship.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

I like the look of a spacer above the stem - it serves a purpose and i like form to follow function on a bike.

I could buy the 'steerer might get crushed' arguement around not having a spacer above the stem, if the top of the steerer wasn't filled with an expander plug which is applying outward pressure in all directions.

FFS How long is this going on for? Anyone with half a brain who has never seen a bike before could have sorted this basic bike problem in a few minuets. Anyone without half a brain could have found out what to do on you tube even quicker.
I just hope nobody with a rocket problem contacts this forum.

Very constructive, thanks for helping the OP.

You do know what forums are for I take it?

Geraint Thomas also has spacers under his stem and look at how he falls of basically every day.......

    He also won the TDF.

I'm sure Ineos Grenadiers will be on the phone to you shortly about improving his setup.

Hope not because I'm at work and I don't give out my mobile number very often.

it doesn't really serve a purpose though, does it as agreed above?

it could be construed as unnecessary clutter bowing to poor worksmanship, destroying smooth lines and detracting from form, adding unrequired complexity and, in today's marginal gains world, one may say weight, albeit it a few grammes.

    dump the spacer

    level flat top cap

    slam

    be boonen.

I'm sure you could give it out on this occasion.

If a Grand Tour winner asks for your help it's your duty to do so.

After all they do ride rim brakes.

Point taken. That bottle of Australian red must have made me a bit less tolerant than I usually am.
OP, A picture is worth a thousand words, and a bit of video is worth ten thousand. You tube will tell you how to sort bike problems far better than this forum.
