As I tried to say - I appear my stance is probably hypocritical which is why I raised it - my main wish is that more altruistic ventures could be quite so profitable as well.

I bet for entertainment, so can't be bothered with the above although I would do the first category if I was capable.
I understand how it works, but I can't really explain it very well - but the important thing to remember is that it is risk free - regardless of what some people may think (and tell you), because the process involves placing two bets.

When I was a little kid, unless your dad was a rep, nobody had a car and legal betting shops had not arrived. That was a long while ago. A bloke down our street had a big maroon Buick . He was Billy Smith , the bookie . The police must have turned a blind eye because the car was a bit conspicuous, parked on its own, outside a terraced house. At a very young age I worked out that bookies made a lot of money from their customers . I never understood where their customers got their stake money from because nobody, except Billy, had any money but I was sure that giving money to bookies was a bad idea. I have never places a bet in my life. The pools ( remember them? ) and the odd lottery excepted. I think I will keep it that way.0 -
We had a betting shop on a corner near where i grew up. Always had the door open with one of those ribbon curtain things over the door, with smoke spewing out through it. Only ever saw people going in and out who looked like they were on hard times, rather than well off people. Not sure if that clouded my view, but I was never tempted to bet really. The odd grand national sweepstake at work and been to the dog track a couple of times (both times came away with more money than I started with, including entry, beers and chicken in a basket dinner), but that was all luck (or betting on whatever dog did a poo on the parade).
It always seemed clear to me that in the long run, only the bookie wins.0 -

I went to a casino once and I was expecting a bit of excitement from the betting. Bored as anything, the best thing was free drinks and finger food which helped my patience as there was a numb nuts who kept accusing me of stealing his cards ( the ones which were dealt to me!)
I used to host corporate hospitality at Chester races , had the odd flutter but nothing serious and saw the whole betting game as light entertainment.
Personally it’s good to see UK company doing well, as regards to her renumeration, again it’s a congratulations from me.
