Surprised how strung out the bunch has been since I switched on. They seem to be working much harder than I'd assumed they would in this race.

I was surprised at that too, was expecting a TDF week 2 transition stage feel.

Did someone say it was a tail wind? That should make it harder in the bunch.

Something seeing the early stages of a long race makes me ponder. How do the riders get their leg warmers off? You see riders ditching jackets and gilets as they warm up but I've never seen anyone taking off leg warmers. I assume they mainly stop to do it but sometimes you see riders still wearing them late in the race where stopping is likely to be difficult.

I have seen it done while holding on to the team car (works for one leg but could beca struggle for the other), or with a teammate for assistance, but definitely something you would have to make an early call on before the race is on.

Turns out, surprise, surprise to have been much ado about nothing.
Seems the peloton decided to take a collective break for a spot of lunch and some kit adjustments.

That really was a short ride but I felt every pedal stroke... 😮‍💨🤧

Think I might have misjudged my form this year.

I got a mate into watching bike racing last year. Warned him it was 280km of nothing and 10km of fun, but he's watching most of it anyway, cos he's an Italophile.

I'm wondering if MvdP has a weakness on distance/fuelling? Thinking of the Worlds, the TA stage where he imploded. Maybe that's why people are keener to drive the pace

(No, I'm not even really convincing myself...)

Thinking an early attack from the favourites would suit Bennett

    Jumbo winding it up.
