Iran and brass necks

So Iran has held Nazanin Zaghari-Radcliffe for five years on terrorist charges and now have her back in court for more crimes. This women much be the female Jason Bourne to have achieved this whilst in a maximum security prison.

They seem as a nation to have no concept as to how their actions are viewed. Is it time for Western nations to think outside the box and create a two tiered justice system that mirrors the Iranian regime for Iranian nationals outside Iran. The more ludicrous the charges the better. These clowns are still afforded an embassy in London FFS.

I think from Iran's point of view she's just leverage they can use against the UK. I don't know enough about the details, but I understand that they believe there is an outstanding debt owed by the UK government to Iran. Knowing a little bit about the pre-revolution history of our involvement in that bit of the world, it would not surprise me. They have no real interest in what she may or may not have done. I doubt us abusing their ex pats would help the situation, if that is what you are suggesting. Just make it even less likely that she is released.

its a cultural and religious thing too. Im not able to influence diplomatic approaches but if I were, Id move past them, engage our security services in the UK then flatten the country. putting paid to any hope they can develop or deliver nuclear or chemical weapons in the future.

Yes, the UK Government has even acknowledged the debt (something to do with payment for military equipment that ordered back in days of the Shah that didn't get delivered I think) but are saying they can't pay it due to sanctions.

the debt is something like 700 million for an unfullfilled weapons contract (Iran paid, coup happened, weapons never delivered, Iran asked for money back, Britain has never given it back)

Britain has been umming and erring and faffing over repayment using the sanctions as an excuse but solutions have been found but Britain insists that there are "issues" - ie they want to keep the money.

The Iranians are using the poor woman as a political pawn. Johnson and his constant verbal diarrhoea didn't help last time she was nearly released and unfortunately he got involved again this time behind the scenes.

D37: that's cloud cuckoo land mate. Firstly, I don't know what spy novels you're reading but the security services don't do that sort of thing. Secondly, Britain couldn't flatten Belgium, let alone Iran. Thirdly, if you want to pick a fight with Iran you're a much, much braver man than I.....

I think the original deal was £400m, but there is disagreement over if and how much interest is owed. As Matt says, the government have acknowledged the debt, but they don't know/pretend to don't know how to get around US sanctions.

Let's also not forget how Boris fucked it up a couple of years back as Foreign Secretary when he said Nazarin was training journalists in Iran, which Iran used against her as it proved their claim!

Iran are clearly bastards, but we need to stop thinking that every other in the country in the world holds/values/should follow western standards. If the world was a democracy, western values would very quickly get voted down.

She was not convicted of terrorist charges, it was for plotting to topple the Govt. These were not made up crimes as they were confirmed by a Mr B. Johnson who is such a pillar of the international community that he is the political leader of the UK.

Whilst I may think 6 years a tad harsh for secretly training journalists it is hardly as if she was innocently snatched off the street whilst shopping and she must have known the possible consequences of her actions

She wasn't training journalists though, in spite of what BoJo spaffed.

From a previous thread, the BJ Burqa one.

Must admit to not following the Nazanin case very much. According to the Economist, the charges against her were

They accused her of designing websites to support “the sedition”, a reference to the mass demonstrations that erupted following rigged presidential elections in 2009. They also suspected her of previously training Iranian journalists abroad, including a group from Narenji, a website specialising in new technology, who had received heavy jail terms a year earlier. She was sentenced to five years in prison for working to overthrow the regime.

We bought the nukes off the yanks and can’t launch them without their help. If the yanks wanted to nuke Iran they have plenty of their own.

I think we could have a bit of fun with this. Arrest the embassador and claim it was for shagging the queen's corgis and stipulate a life sentence as we Brits really like dogs just as much as they love religion. Bang his wife up for being a lesbian as we are just following their religious beliefs. Just keep going till there are more Iranians banged up in the UK than Brits in Iran. Then keep suggesting a prisoner swap. The world is missing some mickey taking on the world stage.

send them loads of vaccine and when the microchips kick in, use them as a drone army against ISIS.

but according to Joe90 in the vaccine thread all the vaccine gas been watered down/cut with talc already, so doesn't that mean that the microchips may not be in there and we'll have to deal with 50 million Iranians going mad mad looney tunes raving it up?
