New Wheels Ticking

I bought a set of DT Swiss PR1600's for my new bike. I've done about 100 miles on them and have noticed a metallic ticking sound coming from what sounds the like back wheel. The sound happens intermittently almost at random.

I've indexed the gears and checked the rotors are not rubbing so my current diagnosis is there may be a spoke thats a little loose?

Thoughts appreciated.

First thing to check, are you using an inner tube valve nut? Is it tight?

No, they're set up tubeless but the tubeless valve nut is tight.

It could well be you have uneven spoken tension, but you would ether need to get a spoke tension tool from someone like Park Tools or take to decent bike shop to confirm 100%

But to help narrow it down, does it happen when you are pedalling or when you are free wheeling? As if it is the latter, it is less likely to be a spoke tension issue.

It might be a bit of disc brake rotor rub.

Did you gently push the pads/pistons back into the caliper, using something like a plastic tyre lever (I have one set with a thin flat handle that work a treat for this), when you swapped wheels?

  • And now I've just seen you checked the rotor... It's been a long day at work, I wondered why the self-service tills at Sainsburys seemed to be faulty, I had put item to right of till where the basket would have been if I'd had more than a meal deal! :D:#

Dry spokes - I had the same on my new front Prime.

Pop a couple of drops of oil ( I used 3:1) on each spoke, leave overnight to soak in, job jobbed.

ok the issue you have here is almost certainly one of three things.

1 where the spokes cross at the rear they creak, add a smidge of grease as above.

2 its coming from the rim, yes the rim can be the source of this

3 where the spokes sit in the hub

I had to rebuild my rear minus the straight pull rear hub to shut it up.

Are you a err average sized rider?

Do you mean from the inside of the rim bed (under the rim tape)?

Is it possible my wheels just need re-tensioning? Seen a few things online of new wheels needing this after the first few rides?

if you have clinchers you may as well but i only ride tubs and couldn't be fagged to take them off so dripped the oil down the spoke and let it sort itself into the nipple.

    worked a #treat

Have done this myself in exactly the same way as MF and it worked a treat. I will always try the easy fix first.
