Colnago C64 setup suggestions

Nice to virtually meet everyone,

In the process of getting my hands on a C64, I have not been keeping up with technology and trying to gather preferences and why.

Any thoughts on the following:

Carbon Wheelset recommendations?
Dura Ace or Ultegra to save a few bucks?
Disc or Rim brakes?
Tubeless or Clinchers?
SpeedPlay or Shimano pedals?
Headset --> Stem --> Handlebar setup?
Cranks?
Other Accessories?

I ride roughly 150-200 miles a week, weekdays are flats and weekends are climbs.
I’m 5’11” with a slightly larger torso and as I’ve gotten older my setup is less aero than it used to be.
I want the my ride to be stiff, but not harsh/uncomfortable.
I'm not obsessed with bike weight, but try to keep it as light as possible without sacrificing quality/durability.

Thank you in advance!

Didn't you ask this in another post that was answered?

If its a C64 though just go full Record 12 speed with Bora Ultra.

Good enough to win the Tour on so good enough for you and better than D/A.

Why oh why you'd want to put Ultegra on a '64 is beyond us though.

Exactly as Ben said but I'd go Deda or Fizik above Ritchey

This is near perfect for me (but wish they still had the airbrushed top tube racer).

Ultegra is the thinking man's group set. Indistinguishable in blind testing but half the price of Dura Ace.

Which is why no serious people use it - if you're using Shimano its D/A or, as seen at the Commonwealths, Tiagra.

Its the clubbies groupset. MF has it on his Soloist as its the winter bike and if he smashes it up or it gets nicked its only Ultegra so no great loss to, well, anyone

105 for functionality, D/A if you want quality.

Ultegra is, basically, the Karen of groupsets. No one aspires to it but plenty are stuck with it.

105 is okay, but a bit sloppier in shifting. It is also only mechanical.

All Shimano stuff is hideous anyway (particularly the chainsets) so the "bling" of Dura Ace is a downside in my book. I don't mind expensive things - I spent £400 on a stem for god's sake - but it has to offer some value to me. Dura Ace doesn't look any better or work any better so offers no value.

I accept that "value" and "£400 on a stem" may be hard to reconcile.

I find the combination of a retro paint job and a modern frame and parts quite jarring.

Retro or modern. Pick n' stick.
No wrong at either end but pick n' mix will always be conflicting.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

  • Dura ace well have you tried buying a groupset?

Chorus or record 12 speed is available. I manage to ship the stuff.

Chorus and record are functionally the same. Theres a few differences, record brakes have bearings in the pivots and the record crankarms are hollow. There a big price difference.

Wheels well mine or campagnolo boras.

Campag kit is the better choice here. Shimano kit is slick enough. Campag 12 speed is a probably the quickest shifting mechanical groupset there has ever been.

:D And I thought any controversy would be due to the lack of Campagnolo! :p

Still near perfect for me. I only agree with flasher's comment re the oversized pulley. (And, if I was forced to nitpick, I'd prefer a standard black, non-colour-matched seatpost.)

The cassette looks like a mountain bike one with a huge bailout gear.

I have tiny little ladies hands, and its never been a problem (even in the drops). Although, there is quite a difference between my Potenza and Chorus shifters.

I have been really pleased with it. I’m a bit of a Colnago fanboy , this is my 6th! In the photo it has a Berk saddle but I just didn’t get on with it so has an Antares Versus 00 now. I also went for the Sram Red 1190 cassette to save some weight over the Dura Ace one.

:s The above bike's not mine -- I only found the photo on the interwebs -- The original poster was looking for ideas for his future Colnago and, for me, Colnago = Mapei colourway as Ferrari = red.

I do have an Arione though and it is on my Mapei Colnago. Only it's a Dream Lux :(;)

Glad you're enjoying yours. Really is a beautiful bike and looks amazing fun to ride.

The Dream is a nice bike, especially in Mapei 😉 This is my other Mapei Colnago, a C40. This has 10S Campagnolo Record and Delta’s for old school bling!

A grouting brand never looked so good.
