Chain slipping off cassette. Won't drive in any gear. by REDDY90

Hi all,

I am still fairly new to cycling. My bike has been in the shed for a while and I've now taken it indoors to use on my turbo trainer( direct drive)
I have set the bike up on the trainer, however when I try to pedal the chain just starts slipping and come off the cassette, I have tried setting it on each of the gears the chain just kind of grinds and slips off eventually at the bottom.I can't seem to get it to actually provide any drive. This is the same if I have the bike set up as or as not on the trainer.

Any advice or suggestions on how to fix this would be much appreciated.

Any chance of a vid so we can see?

Mech set up ok? Limit screws? Mech not caught anywhere?
    .
The camera down the willy isn't anything like as bad as it sounds.

    New/old cassette? New/old chain?

That looks like classic chain slip seen with a new chain on an old cassette, but logic dictates you have the opposite of this is a new trainer (new cassette, old chain), which I don't think causes this issue to such a degree.

Unless the chain is very old/worn?

  • Its an old chain about 18 months, not heavily used, cassette on the trainer is about 12 month old again not heavily used.

I have the same issue when I have it set up as normal with the back wheel but can managed to get 2 gears to work and hold on.

Have you measured the chain over 12 links? Or used a chain wear gauge?

I can only think that the chain is absolutely radged.

  • ^ I tend to agree with Ben6899 here, measure the chain as suggested (post result)
Order a replacement chain, you'll use it at some point anyway, so no harm to your pocket in the long run

It looks from the video that the rear derailleur hanger might not be straight- possibly knocked in the shed?
Is the chain the correct speed for the cassette? eg not an 8/9 speed chain on a 11 speed cassette. By eye, the chain looks too wide. Is it a Shimano Claris (8 speed) derailleur with an 11 speed cassette?
Also have you checked the rear derailleur hasn't seized from storage. Check allpivots move freely.

One other thing- check the shifting is working smoothly. Are the shift cables operating smoothly?

Now I’ve had chance to watch the video on a computer, the chain does appear to be too wide for that cassette.

What bike do you have? (make/model/year)
How many gears does/should it have?
What have you bought/changed since getting it?

We need as much information as possible on your original equipment please REDDY90 in order to advise the correct remedy
  • Update: thanks for all your help, I have changed the cassette kn the turbo trainer to one that is compatible with my chain. This issue with not being able to change gears has been solved, the internal rachet was stuck, stopping it from changing gears this is now being fixed
