  • Mornin'

Done an hour of wfh, now thinking of heading out for a clear the head ride on what appers to be a relatively dry, temperate morning. Give the new lights a bit of a workout before the Covid hordes descend onto the roads like lemmings.

Think I'm going to enjoy today, already proving rather productive. Long may it continue.

Think I needed more than 4 hrs kip, but had a good night, so that’s all that counts.

Today is mostly processing wood as my parents have had a few trees taken down.

Later is the pub as the MIL is over

She's gone walking in London Town with a pal. I'm doing the domestic bit.
  • Early fog/mist is continuing to lift, everything is wet but no rain for now.

Got a little shopping to do then go for a ride I think. I’ll decide at the time whether to go on the road or trail depending on the then weather. Beer later! (I’ll be celebrating)

@lincolndave have a try of this website for your local weather, you can tune it to a particular station if you wish and have personal settings if you login, works for me https://www.wunderground.com/weather/gb/lincoln/ILINCO46

Lie in. Finally stirred to make the starter for the day coffee to bring back to bed. Open device to find notification that courier 2 drops away to deliver package that I had been informed would be here on Monday. Timing is everything. Result all round. Impressive free delivery by CPW on kitchen appliance only ordered Thursday evening.

Coffee #1 now consumed, fora browsed. Sun is out. Time to get arris in gear and go soft pedal somewhere easy, mud and gloop minimisation please.

Coffee consumed. No plans, OH is pestering me to come up with a plan because she knows I’ll be grumbly if I waste the weekend. I was going to spend the morning looking at the cheapest 911s on auto trader but apparently that doesn’t constitute a plan...

If I don’t come up with something quick I’ll end up wandering round Dunelm or something lame.

If I hadn’t enjoyed our first night of tier one so much I was tempted to get up and go north to do a Munro but I don’t know how that works with tiers, and also I’m lazy.

    Morning folks,
Traditional slow start was enjoyed, should make coffee now. Not a lot planned for today. Might try to go for a wobble and see how the wrist holds up. Can't go to the old dear's as nephew has arrived from Italy.

If you want cheap, get a 2005 to 2010 Cayman. Preferably an S. "One of the best handling sports cars out there."*

    *Chris Harris.

But you must get a bore scope prior to purchase regardless of any model of Porker. Never buy based on mileage, always purchase based on condition. Less than 5% of 911 (997's Generation 1's) suffer bore scoring and rarely but sometimes IMS failure. (Intermediate shaft bearing) but it does happen.
996's are more prone (7%). Same with Caymans and Boxsters.

    A 911 3.6L engine rebuild is iro £6k. A 3.8 is £12.5k.
Gen 2 911 997's are slightly less of a risk but they will be out of your price range and many say that the Generation 1 is the better car.
So it doesn't matter what Porker you buy, you need an independent inspection including bore scope before purchase. Dealer inspection £600+, independent Porsche specialist (IPS) £275 - £325.

On the plus side, service is every 2 years and they are Major then minor then major etc but they recommend annual oil changes which you can do yourself.
Also, 996's and Gen 1 997's are not too expensive for parts. Same as early Caymans and Boxsters.

911 Dealer major service £675, Minor £375. Brake fluid change every 2 to 4 years. IPS service: £450/£250.
Oil must be Mobil 1 fully synthetic and will set you back (including filter) £110.
    Tax for a 3.6 is £345 pa and for the 3.8 - £515!
Insurance is less than you would think but big jumps from say a 2.7 Cayman to a 3.8 or 3.8s Gen 1 911 997.
2 wheel drive 911 997's are more of a drivers car and the 4 wheel drive one's are preferred and fetch a higher price (because the owners are woos's). 2 wheel drive's are much more fun.
Auto's make great cars, are useable daily and don't need expensive clutch changes. PDK (paddle shift) models are way out of your price range anyway and only available on the late late Gen 1's and Gen 2's.

    https://www.porscheclubgb.com/buying-guides

Do not buy one lightly or you could get mugged.

Sorry to piddle on your chips.

My 997 went in for a service and I found out... it had a new engine fitted in Reading Porsche when the car had done 47k. So my engine has only done 26k. That's a result.

Must do last of Christmas shopping. Can you get Arsenic infused Chocolate for the MiL?

Pinno - what a super post. I am also looking at buying the cheapest Porsche I can get my hands on. Was thinking £10k and I was looking at a Gen 1 987 Boxter - manual, pre PDK.

Plan is to use year round, likely do about 3k miles per year.

I read about IMS issues in Boxters but heard most had been replaced now.

Today's run/hike got cancelled because the big Geordie bus company CBA running buses here today despite the wars of cash they're getting to run them empty.
Turned into a glorious day too.
In a cafe currently next to a family with a dog called Boris.
  • Be careful that Boris doesn't try and shag your leg.

Pinno, that’s great! Really useful info. I was looking at a gen 1 or 2 996 rather than stretching for a cheap 997. Nearly everything I have looked at has the IMS sorted, and some of them have engine rebuilds (especially the 3.6l).

I won’t be using it as a daily because I have a work car for that. The OH recently bought an old defender as a second car because she loves them which is all the approval for me to get what I want too ;)

Seems a bit frivolous to have 2 cars between the two of us but she won’t swap her daily for a Caymen or something so I’m left with no choice. I would be surprised if I can get my hands on a 911 for sub 17k ish any other time so we shall see. I’ll probably wait until the spring so I don’t die immediately in it, it would make a nice 30th present for myself in October too...

Need to have a go in one really!
  • Similar situation to me Hayden albeit your budget is more than me.

Not sure I want to have a go in one with weather as it is right now as I've no experience in RWD sports cars.

If I were going for a Porker, I'd go 911. Provided you don't buy a lemon as Prof. Pinno warns, or get totally shafted on insurance (not sure what it would cost a 29/30 yo?).

    Has BR morphed into PistonHeads?

Pedals pedalled. Luvverly out. Legs took ages to get going but eventually. Discovered a lovely scenic bit of a local Sustrans route that used to be rough as is now reopened with cracking smooth new surface. Ain't been that way in years.

Bike hosed down, not too much gloop and glaur today, letting the sun do some drying on it before completing the fettle and putting it to bed.

Then it's prob do nowt. Found that all 7 existing series of Spiral are up on iPlayer. Only got into Laure et al in series 2. That's my winter tv watching sorted out.

Budget is as yet unconfirmed, based on wild speculation but probably doable...

Insurance is £230 for leisure only and 4K miles a year which is worrying but good news!

Not especially well healed, just really irresponsible :)

You can tell who's well healed around here. I was thinking I was being extravagant getting a little Suzuki SJ for mud plugging and upsetting Chelsea tractor drivers.

A well used 15yo L200 is much better at upsetting Chelsea tractor drivers 😊 Nope, you ain't gonna intimidate this battered but much loved tank...

My old Isuzu was a bit like that. I’ll be sad the see the Gl-Amarok go on the 22nd but I have a mystery temporary car til the new work one arrives in March (brexit aside)

Porsche's are so well planted and you can use them as a daily - especially the auto's. 2nd hand Auto's are a bit better because they are less likely to have been thrashed, they don't need clutches, are like a lamb driving normally and don't suffer the constant 'transmission shock' with any clutch in any vehicle. (People think they know how to change gear).
They are fitted with Mercedes Tiptronic gearboxes which have both fully auto mode or semi-manual. They are great gearboxes.

Boxsters are not as powerful as the 911 range. If you are not far from a track, go and get a lesson in it. They are nothing to be frightened about once you learn how to drive it.

I drive mine in all weathers.

The Amarok we have at work is useless in anything remotely muddy even with semi rugged tyres, to the extent that the SJ with its winch has had to rescue it twice so far. The SJ punches well above its weight.

I just drive about on pretty good forest roads and wanted something powerful but without paying a billion pounds in tax ;)

150bhp T-roc coming next year which I suspect will be a bit lame, another reason to look for something fun for the weekends
  • Well that’s today’s trail ride completed and bike de-mudded, by-eck that was hard work! The riding not the washing.
It’s been lightly raining all afternoon but the real headache is the fact the farmers have ploughed up some of the bridleways and footpaths I use. They’ve then driven down them in their tractor that has big knobbly tyres to flatten and ‘remake’ the tracks. Very muddy and incredibly slippery, took me ages to get along some sections and I’m knackered! not to mention covered in cr@p
Just having a cuppa then onto the beer I think
  • Thanks Pinno. Defo will get some lessons.

I think my budget gets me gen 1 987 which is either manual or auto (not the pdk). I want manual.

Wife is aghast at the thought but I want one.

Question now is maybe I should go Cayman (if affordable) or would be 10k be better spent elsewhere.

  • Had a successful day selling all manner of cycling tat on Ebay resulting in a nice wad of cash hitting the bank account a couple of weeks before Christmas.

Had a long chat with the OH? this evening on the phone. I think there is room to manouevre and compromise for the two of us to get our relationship back on track. For both of us it's been a difficult year, where it's too easy to get blinkered by ones own problems while forgetting to look at the bigger picture.

I'm far more confident that we will sort things out than I was a week ago.

    Onwards and upwards.
  • Why on earth can I not sleep?
Absolutely knackered yet as soon as I doze off a thousand thoughts come crashing into my mind.
If I've had an hours sleep I've done well, yet here I am getting up.
