Chain slipping after maintenance - what have I done wrong? (video in description)

Hello

Trying to do up an old bike for my brother - I cleaned it and replaced the chain and gear cables, but now the chain slips when riding it (I can't say for sure but I don't think it did this before). When replacing the chain I tried to make sure the new chain had the same number of links as the old one.

Any suggestions as to what I've done wrong?

    Have you routed the chain properly through the derailleur? I've done that before and it was the wrong side of one of the metal "lips".

    It's a bit hard to tell but it looks like it's slipping on the front chain ring to me. It's not unusual for a new chain to skip on a used cassette due to the different wear rates and it's not inconceivable that in this case that the chainrings that are worn rather than the cassette which may have been previously replaced at some point. It's impossible to say without seeing them or knowing how hard a life they've had though.

    Tis hard to see, but it looks as the chain/cassette isn’t moving/jumping so it must be the chainring sliping. You have another two chainrings (though they may be as bad), try those. But chances are the small ring that your video shows is worn out and needs replacing and possibly all three need renewing

    A new crankset /chainrings and more than likely a new cassette too will fix that problem.

    It took me ages to get round to fixing the bike - ended up finishing it just before Christmas.

    Thanks for all the replies - they were spot on about needing new chainrings and a new freewheel too - are the old worn parts:




    The bike is running great now.
