The Sprint up the hill to Assisi was rather good. Vos probably never not going to win but Cecilie made it a competition.

Lizzie Banks cheeky AF today  Possibly Bujak didn't realise quite how much time they had to play around

Banks seemed perfectly happy to lose it, didn't she? Sort of the anti-Sagan.

She could have rolled home with the gap they had though. Why Eugenia didn't just slow right up I don't know, not that astute. She was only just behind at the end. Fair play to Lizzie, the cunning old fox.

Stage 6 - Date: 16/09 Torre del Greco - Nola

A shortish stage of some 97km with a final climb then a long run down to the finish will suit a breakaway. The route starts from the town on the outskirts of Naples, between Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples, before heading inland to Nola, the city that was the birthplace of the philosopher Giordano Bruno (yeah I don't know who he is either). Nola is also famous for the festival of lilies which UNESCO has included as an intangible heritage of humanity.

Their a third category kom located in Sarno (293 meters above sea level) after about thirty kilometers from the start.

    Torre del Greco

The locals are sometimes called Corallini because of the once plentiful coral in the nearby sea, and because the city has been a major producer of coral jewellery and cameo brooches since the seventeenth century.

Historically part of Magna Graecia, the area was first colonised by ancient Greek settlers. In Roman times, Torre del Greco was probably a suburb of Herculaneum and, like elsewhere on the Bay of Naples such as at Oplontis and Stabiae, many patrician's villas would have lined the coast. In 79 AD the eruption of Vesuvius buried the area under volcanic ash.

The nearby Roman Villa Sora was a large and sumptuous residence overlooking the sea from its 150m-long frontage, dating from the 1st c. BC, whose excavated remains can be seen today.

The current name appears for the first time in 1015; according to tradition, it stems from a Greek hermit who took up residence in the tower, or from the cultivation of a particular vine from Greece.

    Nola

Under Roman rule, the city was the site of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Battles of Nola during Hannibal's invasion of Italy amid the Second Punic War. On two occasions (215 and 214 BC), it was defended by Marcellus. It fell by treason to the Samnites during the Social War. It was stormed by Spartacus during his failed slave revolt.

Roman ruins, including an amphitheatre and temple to Augustus, survived as long as the 16th century, they were then plundered for building material and few signs remain.

The basilica of San Felice has an east-west orientation, and consists of two opposing apses and an aedicule, which encloses the tomb of San Felice.

The original square-plan basilica was replaced by a larger hall with an apse to the north and an entrance to the south. In the second half of the 4th century an apsidal building with three naves with an east-west axis was added, indicated by the name of "oriental basilica". Between 484 and 523 an aedicule decorated with mosaics on a gold and blue background was built around the tomb of Saints Felice and Paolino.

The bell tower, located between the western apse and the entrance to the basilica, with a square plan, was built between the 12th and 13th centuries.

    Cicala Castle

The origins of Castelcicala are very ancient and the first inhabitants to populate it were precisely the Nolans who, attracted by the very comfortable life on the hill, built the castle. From the 5th to the 13th century, the Nolans were sacked countless times by the barbarians and to complicate the situation were natural phenomena such as earthquakes and eruptions by Vesuvius. So after the destruction of the city due to the vandals of Genserico, the cicadas came down from the hill and went to populate other areas of Caserta giving origin to other Neapolitan places such as San Paolo (today San Paolo Bel Sito), Bardi (today Livardi, fraction of San Paolo) and Liveri. However, the area of Castelcicala was also inhabited in the following centuries up to the beginning of the 19th century (as attested by Nola's registry documents in the Caserta State Archives). The last family to live there was the Foglia family, a veteran of the area, characterized by the shape of the so-called "potato" nose, which the locals still call the "cicada nose".

    Cuisine

Obviously the area is associated with Pizza so why not try Taralli. Traditionally made with lard, black pepper, and toasted almonds, taralli are now found in a variety of flavors in bakeries all over town. A warning — they’re super addictive and filling!

  • No idea what happened during the interesting parts of Stage 6, but it must have been fairly tough going with three riders climbing off and four more timed out. Perhaps predictably though the stage eventually came down to a group sprint.

Mariia Novolodskaia went off the front for a long range attack in the final 10km and opened up 30 seconds, but then binned it on a tight corner and couldn't get the chain on in time to avoid being caught by the peloton before she'd even got back up to speed.

With Novolodskaia out of the running the sprinters' teams had time to get themselves organised. The same sketchy road surface that had done for her continued to make nervous viewing, but everyone seemed to get through okay and in the final metres Marianne Vos once again proved stronger than anyone else, although Hannah Barnes made her work for it.

The only surprise was that a gap opened up somewhere with AVV the wrong side of it, allowing Niewiadoma to snatch four seconds back. On the evidence of the race so far though it's unlikely to cause van Vleuten any sleepless nights.

Yes, what we saw was a good race. Liv CCC drilled it on the front blowing off the springs and some other riders. Novolodskaia had the race one until her accident.

End of the road for Audrey Cordon who finished outside the time limit.

    Stage 7 - Date: 17/09 Nola - Maddaloni

Nola-Maddaloni, 112.5 kilometers long, the final circuit is repeated twice, characterized by the climb to the KOM. third category of Valle di Maddaloni - Sanctuary of S. Michele Arcangelo (at 278 meters above sea level). After the final climb there is less than 10km, downhill, to the finish. One for the puncheurs like Elisa Longo Borghini to break on the climb and keep it tight on the descent.

    Maddaloni

If the litter and industrial estates of Nola were not your cup of tea today's finish is in Maddaloni situated in province of Caserta. Mount Vesuvius is still visible from the town.

The city is at the foot of the Tifata hills. The towers of its medieval castle and the Church of San Michele crown the heights above. The fine old palace of the Caraffa family (once dukes of Maddaloni) is a point of interest.

The Gothic church of Santa Margherita has a series of 15th-century frescoes by the Florentine painter Giovanni Balducci. The church of the Annunziata has a series of early 17th century paintings that decorate the rich wooden ceiling. Many of the works were patronized by the local feudal lords, the Carafa family.

About 4 kilometres east of Valle di Maddaloni is the Ponte della Valle, an aqueduct built to carry the water of the Taburno to Caserta across the valley between Monte Longano and Monte Gargano. In that area, the aqueduct goes past a threefold series of arches rising to a height of nearly 100 metres and measuring 529 metres long.

  • Big crash near the finish today. Van Vleuten, Spratt, Vos and others taken down. Looks like van Vleuten has a broken wrist and out the race (not confirmed yet, but Insta story seemed pretty final).

    Lotte Kepecky wins stage.
  • Yup, as above - a massive crash about 1km before the finish line appears to have taken out Maglia Rosa Annemiek van Vleuten, who up until this point has looked unstoppable. The cause appears to have been a touch of wheels between AVV and a Team Sunweb rider - possibly Lianne Lippert - who was bumped sideways as the result of an undulation in the road. It certainly wasn't deliberate - it just looked like the back wheel skipped sideways as it reweighted after the bump. Nothing either rider could do to react in time.

From a much reduced bunch Lotte Kopecky took the sprint by a good few bike lengths, Deignan and Niewiadoma rounded out the stage podium.

Assuming AVV is out of the race - and the suggestion is that she has a broken wrist - Niewiadoma will take the Maglia Rosa with Anna van der Breggan just 15 seconds back. Niewiadoma has had the better of the finishes so far, but they're generally quite evenly matched - there may well be further twists in this Giro.

Vos was complaining about the wheel touch but it actually starts with one of her girls drilling it on the front drifting left which causes a "domino effect" as Vos put it.

As you said, no ones fault really.

"A bad fall, at the last kilometer of the seventh stage of the Giro Rosa, from Nola - Vulcano Buono to Maddaloni, involved Annemiek Van Vleuten, Marianne Vos and Amanda Spratt. These athletes are in hospital for updates, for Van Vleuten there is a fear of a fracture of the arm, for Spratt a fracture of the collarbone. News are expected in the evening. Spratt and Van Vleuten, who is currently in the pink jersey anyway, appeared very sore at the finish."

    and later from Michelton Scott

Race leader Annemiek van Vleuten and Australian champion Amanda Spratt have been forced to withdraw from the Giro Rosa following a crash in the finale of stage seven in Maddolini.

The Mitchelton-SCOTT pair were part of a select group contesting for the stage victory before going down inside the final three kilometres, unable to avoid riders falling in front of them.

Despite being able to roll across the line to finish the stage, the duo were taken to hospital for examinations.

Scans have confirmed a broken left wrist for Van Vleuten, who will return to Holland for surgery in the coming days.

Spratt has avoided any fractures but suffered a heavy hit to her right shoulder and head and was later diagnosed with concussion.

    Annemiek van Vleuten:
“I was in a good position just going safe to the finish. It was a good day for us, I was never in trouble, we were in control, I was having fun on the bike until the last 500 metres when the girls crashed in front of me and I couldn’t avoid them.

“I felt immediately it was not good with my wrist, because I saw that my wrist was not straight, so I knew straight away that was not good. I will go home now and I will have an operation on my wrist on Saturday.

“I’m super sad it’s not possible to defend the maglia rosa, but even more, no worlds on a course that suits me. I’m disappointed that I cannot defend my world champion's jersey."

    Amanda Spratt:
“Right now my biggest feeling is just disappointment, not just for me but for Vleuty and the whole team. Our Giro was going perfectly, and it all fell apart in one instant.

“I think I am lucky I don’t have a broken bone but the shoulder is very painful still and with a concussion I have to take it easy now. I hope to recover as quick as possible and be back racing soon. Thanks to the team for the incredible support.”

Dr. Stephen Baynes - Team Doctor:
“With Annemiek there is a fracture in her left wrist. She had x-rays and a CT scan at the hospital and some treatment. She will now go back to the Netherlands and get a specialist’s opinion and will probably have surgery on Saturday.

“Amanda has got a stiff, painful right shoulder and a concussion, so we will be looking after her within the team for the next few days.

"I’d also like to thank the race doctors and ambulance crew at the race for their help.”

my sympathies with both of the ladies, I have had exactly the same "oh shit my wrist is not straight moment" after a high speed ski crash and 25 years later it still gives me gyp!

I don't see it like that - there's a crossing or something that causes them to bob up, and it looks like the Sunweb rider has her back wheel skip out as a reaction to reweighting it. Whether she put something in at the front end just as she lightened I don't know - it's possible we're just looking at different elements of the same sequence. Not sure you can blame the person at the front for it though - it's not a Bob Jungelesque swing across.

Shame for the race though - AVV was in a class of her own.

18/09 Stage 8 Castelnuovo della Daunia › San Marco la Catola (91km)

The eighth stage the tour moves to Puglia, specifically in the province of Foggia. It starts from Castelnuovo where the surrounding area is full of sulphurous springs that feed the current spa. The riders through Lucera to get to San Marco la Catola, a small town in the hinterland of Foggia, a typical medieval village characterized by narrow streets and alleys.

This is the shortest in-line leg of the Giro, at 91.5 kilometers. The arrival, however, is located uphill at 670 m a.s.l. di San Marco La Catola and is also valid as G.P.M. second category. The Giro Rosa 2020 can be decided on these roads.

The riders will climb 1700 meters in total with the highest point at 62km, some 921 meters above sea level. The final climb starts at 86km climbing 620 meters over 3km before a short drop and a 1km climb over 70 meters to the finish. One for the climbers who can survive to the end.

    Castelnuovo della Daunia

The town's original name was Castrum Sclavorum or Castelluccio de 'Sclavis, as it was founded by the Schiavoni, Slavic populations who, coming from Illyria (present-day Dalmatia, in the Balkan peninsula), landed on the Apulian coasts in three successive waves in 642, in 871 and 926. Pushing into the interior in bandit raids, some groups of Schiavoni reached the area of Castelnuovo.

Towards the middle of the 12th century, the town belonged to the Norman Rogerio de Parisio, who probably built the baronial palace (now the Town Hall) in which an epigraph from the period is still present today

Between 1468 and 1476 a large number of Albanian refugees poured into the town, escaping the massacres committed in their land by the Turks. The difficult coexistence of these refugees with the community lasted beyond the first decades of the sixteenth century, when the Albanians abandoned the town.

The airy layout of the town, with the wide streets, the vast central square and the wide spaces of Largo Imbriani and Piazza Gabriele Canelli, deeply differentiate the town from others in the Dauni hills. The town has a number of historic churches.

    San Marco la Catola

According to legend, San Marco la Catola was founded by some veterans of the sixth crusade, taken prisoner in the Holy Land and freed by Frederick II in 1228 with the capture of Jerusalem. They followed the emperor to Puglia and settled on the hill where San Marco stands.

    Monuments and places of interest

Sanctuary of the Madonna di Josafat, stands on a hill not far from the town and was built around 1530-1535 on the ruins of a pre-existing abbey. It houses a late Byzantine wooden bas-relief depicting the Madonna, venerated with the title of Santa Maria di Josafat, which according to tradition was brought to San Marco by the founders returning from the Holy Land.

Palazzo ducale, belonging to the noble Neapolitan Pignatelli family, feudal lords of San Marco la Catola, was probably enlarged in several phases. Today in ruins, it looks like a fortified palace surrounded by walls with bastions and buttresses. There are two towers that dominate the surrounding countryside and a chapel dedicated to San Marco.

    Cuisine

Stracciatella, a traditional Italian cheese hailing from Puglia. This cheese is actually the inside of the burrata, made from shredded threads of mozzarella di bufala (sfilacci, made from water buffalo's milk) that are mixed with fresh cream.

The texture is silky, buttery, almost runny, and creamy, while the flavors are fresh, milky, and slightly acidic. Stracciatella is very versatile, and due to its mild flavors it can be served with almost anything – from pastas and risottos to pizzas and bruschettas.

for a nightcap try some Mirinello. A liqueur made with wild cherries that grow around Torremaggiore. The fruit of this cherry tree is small, and to make the liqueur, the cherries are traditionally picked by hand. They are then steeped in alcohol for at least a month, and the macerate is filtered and adjusted with sugar and water.

The final result is a ruby red liqueur with flavors and aromas that are reminiscent of cherries and bitter almonds. Mirinello is best served as a digestif, but it can also be added to cocktails or desserts.

Agreed, some shall we say, Italian road design caused the front few to wobble resulting in a touch of wheels and a pile up. Shame for "Vleuty"

So Van Vluten is out with a broken wrist and will miss worlds too. Wow. Don't think anyone would have beaten her next week.
  • Pretty savage finish to stage 8. A 3km climb at 12% with a short false flat and then a wall.

Stage 9 - Date: 19/09 Motta Montecorvino - Motta Montecorvino

Last stage already. A dutch woman in pink but not the one we expected but Van der Breggen did chase Val Vleuten on the Strada Bianchi stage.

This is a mountain circuit race based on Motta Montecorvino. The village is nestled in the unspoiled and wild woods at the foot of the Dauno Subappennino. It is a typical mountain village with stone houses and sloping roofs.

The remaining riders battle over 109.9 kilometers on the roads of Motta Montecorvino. The race circuit, repeated 4 times, is full of ups and downs and includes the difficult climb to Motta Montecorvino (645 meters) which also features in the Queen of the Mountains competition.

There are 2300 meters of climbing with the highest point at 814 meters above sea level. The climb is 400 meters over 13km followed by a short climb of 70 meters over 800 meters, perhaps a springboard for a break?

    Motta Montecorvino

Motta Montecorvino is an town of 695 inhabitants in the province of Foggia the population has dropped from a peak of around 2600 in 1936.

The town rose from the ashes of an older settlement which fell into ruin in the 14th century and was abandoned by the inhabitants around 1375 following an earthquake. They dispersed over the surrounding hills, founding the towns of Volturino, Pietramontecorvino and Motta.

In 1627 a violent earthquake caused widespread damage to the buildings. In 1657 the bubonic plague led to the death of two thirds of the population. Epidemics continued until the late nineteenth century: the town was hit by cholera in 1865 and diphtheria in 1880.

From 1 to 3 October 1943, the area was the scene of the first clash with the Germans by Canadian troops that had landed in Italy and were part of the VIII army commanded by General Bernard Law Montgomery.

    Monuments and places of interest

The historic center partly retains its medieval appearance: the church of San Giovanni Battista dates back to the 15th century and is characterized by the Gothic bell tower from 1447, a probable transformation of one of the towers of the original walls. During the Second World War the bell tower was used as a fortress by the soldiers of the German army.

    Cuisine

Scaldatelli, also called scaldatelle or scallatìll' are a traditional agricultural product from the Apulian province of Foggia. Similar to taralli, but bigger in size, they are made with flour, extra virgin olive oil, wine, salt, and fennel seeds.

They are sometimes additionally flavored with chilli, black pepper, or black olives. Once shaped, scaldatelli are shortly cooked in the boiling water, and then baked in the oven until their crust turns golden and crispy. They are best enjoyed on their own, as an appetizer or a light snack, but they can also be paired with cheese and cold cuts.

    Negroamaro

Along with the Primitivo and the Nero di Troia, the Negroamaro (black and bitter) grape is one of the chief varieties in Puglia, where it has been traced back to the 6th century B.C. This wine was for a long time used as a blending wine thanks to its excellent vigor and productivity. This wine has an intense garnet-red color, a winey and fruity scent in with gentle hints of blackberries and tobacco. It has a full, round flavor.
