or the Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile 2020 to give it its official title. It is the biggest race in the women's calendar and starts this Friday over nine days from September 11-19.

Prosecco anyone?

The race has moved south for its 31st outing with the opening stage a team time trial in Grossetto and stage 2 a Strade Bianche-style race that will include two gravel road sectors along the 124.8km route between Paganico and Arcidosso.

Stage 4 is a monster 170km affair from Assisi - Tivoli, 10km longer than is recommended by the UCI. FDJ rider Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig says "women's racing is finally being taken seriously with this stage, it is not like our uterus's are going to drop out".

The final stage is a circuit race with a sharp climb that could upset the GC.

Any info on coverage? Strade Bianche-style racing is always worth a watch.

Is it uteruss or uteri?

Coverage for this is usually bad given the race it overlaps with. Often a pretty shonky post tour show in Italian.

HOWEVER! I will hold off on my exasperation with Mr. Kirby and the organisation that forces him on us because it is on the GCN App this year! Which is fantastic.

Rai Sport have a one hour highlights package each evening, starting Friday.

    https://www.raiplay.it/guidatv/?channel=rai-sport-piu-hd&date=12-09-2020

Which probably means that Tiz cycling will have it soon after.

We'll have to see if the RAI coverage is accessible outside IT.

Thanks for the preview. Please keep reports coming, as I don't expect to be able to watch in UK.

    Well, would you believe it?
Eurosport have scheduled 1 hours highlights of each stage at 9-30pm each evening.
So, should also be available on the player GCN race pass etc.

I call foul. Edited post, so not allowed.

At least I read all posts once, which is more than can be said of quite a few around here.

The first stage is advertised as live on the Eurosport player schedule. However on a closer look it looks like they are showing the last 50 minutes of each stage live and highlights later.

I wouldn't hold my breath on Rai delivering live coverage.
They have a bit of a history as far as that goes and that time seems wrong.
Plus it's not on their schedules, just the hour highlights.

  • I thought I heard GCN saying there was literally no option for live coverage, only thing available for them to buy was the highlights package.

    Stage 1 - 11/09: TTT Grosseto – Grosseto

The start is in the historic Piazza Dante featuring the outstanding white and pink marble facade of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo.

The Giro Rosa 2020 kicks off with a flat team time trial of just over 16 kilometers through the heart of Grosseto. Time gaps may already put some water between the GC hopefuls.

    Start List:
    https://procyclingstats.com/race/giro-d-italia-femminile/2020/startlist/roster

    Riders and Teams

The field looks very strong for this, the 30th edition of the Giro Rosa

It is hard to rule out on form Mitchelton-Scott rider Annemiek Van Vleuten who is seconded by Amanda Spratt. Annemiek rode part of the way to Grosetto as training. Boels have a former winner in Anna Van de Breggan and a strong overall team. CCC Liv have on form former winner Marianne Vos and Ashleigh Moolman. Trek is bringing a power team with French champion Audrey Cordon-Ragot, Lizzie Deignan, who has performed well in the opening one day events and Eliza Longo Borghini who hopes to pick up her first stage win. Audrey has just completed the 5 day Tour Cycliste Féminin International de l'Ardèche where she won the Avignon stage. Team Sunweb is led by Leak Kirchmann supported by Coryn Rivera who has been a bit quiet lately.

    British Riders

    Elizabeth Holden - Bizkaia Durango
    Hannah Barns - Canyon Sram
Elizabeth Banks - Équipe Paule Ka (ex Bigla-Katusha)
    Abby-Mae Parkinson - Lotto Soudal
    Elizabeth Deignan - Trek

    Grosetto

Grosseto is located in the central Italian region of Tuscany and lies 14 kilometres (9 miles) from the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The main sites are the walls were commissioned by Cosimo I de Medici in 1564 as well as numerous medieval palaces and churches. The Palazzo Aldobrandeschi was almost entirely rebuilt in the early 19th century. The Romanesque San Lorenzo cathedral, the main monument of the city was begun at the end of the 13th century, by architect Sozzo Rustichini of Siena. The façade of alternate layers of white and black marble is Romanesque in style, but is almost entirely the result of 16th century and 1816–1855 restorations.

The city featured in the Italian classic film la Dolce Vita as well as The Talented Mr Ripley.

    Cuisine
Schiaccia alla pala (oven-baked bread with oil) and Schiaccia con cipolle e acciughe (oven-baked bread with onions and European anchovy) are typical breads of the city of Grosseto.

Acquacotta is typical of Mount Amiata: it is a poor soup, and the main ingredients are artichokes, broccoli, cabbage, beans, borage, pisciacane (dandelion) and similar vegetables.

The Maremmana cattle is one of the two breeds used in the preparation of the florentine steak.

Stage win in the Giro Rosa. I'll have to double check that.

Seems to be the case. She's won the young rider, QoM and Italian Rider (4 times) competitions but no stages by the look of it.

That really surprises me too, always assumed she'd won stages in this.

Wanting to watch to support this is really conflicting with my policy of never watching TTs cos it's pointless...

Best put a spoiler warning in the thread title, btw.

In the TTT Longo Borghini crosses the line first for the winning Trek-Segafredo and puts on the pink jersey. Guess that counts as a maiden stage win, even if it's a shared one?

  • Won't worry about the spoiler format now people are warned...

Turned on the TV to see Van Vleuten apparently riding her whole team off her wheel, so I guess she's going okay...
