Advise for a new hybrid/mountain bike ( I am a heavy guy)

I am a heavy guy around 150kg looking to get back in to cyclin, getting fit again and socialising with a local riding club. I am looking towards a hybrid bike, but would also consider a mountain bike.

I am looking for recommendations or advice due to my weight, as I am concerned I may be a bit on the heavy side to cycle at the moment.

My ideal budget Is up to £400. However I would go a little higher if needed. Can anyone help with advice on brands to go for or avoid ?

I have looked around and found two bikes I like the look of, once is a Trek Dual Sport 2, and the other being a Giant Escape 3 Disc. Although I am not sure if these are suitable due to my weight.

I hope someone can help.

You'll need to check with the manufactures spec sheet re max weight carrying capacity of bike, which should be clearly stated. You will certainly need MTB style wide tyres (37mm) - because the pressure would have to be way too high on narrow tyres.

Good luck, I was heavy when I started which is why I know the above. Other tips, if you want any, are use a calorie counting watch (wrist HRM style) and a food calorie counter on your phone. Worked for me.

I would've thought a steel or aluminium frame would be able to handle your weight ok but check manufacturer recommendations first. A wheelbuilder should be able to put you a good set of wheels together with 36 spokes and some decent rims that won't break the bank.

PS, checking on Giant's website, their MTBs are typically limited to 136kg max rider weight.

Happened upon the FAQ on Halfords' website (Carrera, Boardman brands) which states 120kg rider Plus 20kg luggage = 140kg as a limit. Guess if you don't push it too hard and dodgy descents you'd be ok.

    Thank you for this 😎
