Slowish start, will head into town shortly to enjoy my newly reopened local cafe and drop some stuff at the charity shops. Dog walking and footy on the box later.

Started off sunny, then clouded over, really humid and just lashed it down for 60 seconds.
Marshalling a time trial later :worried:

DHL and the art of bicycle maintenance.

Doesn't quite roll off the tongue so easily.

    Evening folks,
Another hard day of coffee and lounging by the pool, went for quite a long walk through the woods yesterday and got eaten alive so thought I'd take it easy. Did see a few wild boar and some deer though. Thankfully even the boar decided to keep a respectable distance. Should probably crack a beer soon.

You missed a word DHL. It's the dark art of bicycle maintenance

Isn't it always a dark art where a dark haired lord is involved?
  • Evening update on the dark art of bicycle maintenance to my daughters dolce:
Fitted new crankset with sensible 165mm arms, no problem.
Cut steerer and fitted new fork and headset bits, no problem.
    Tried refitting front brake, bugg3r.
Anyone know where I can get a 35mm pivot nut?

@darkhairedlord - I have a plethora of stainless steel bolts.
    Size (M4, M5, M6 etc)?
Head (alen, phillips, hex head, Torx)?
    Thread pitch?

A picture next to a tape measure would narrow it down.
Do you need a deep nut to fit through the back of the fork?

I almost certainly have one in the Big Box Of Random Bike Bits, but current time from OH to OT is about 2 weeks.

An LBS should have them, although 35mm is unusually long.

  • Hi
, it's the recess nut. So the one that sinks into the back of the fork. I have a 25mm but that doesn't reach the the stud on the back of the brake. Really need a 35 or longer. Most of the usual online retailers dont stock these, only SJS who will take 8-10 days. I'll phone around s few local stores Monday if they are answering the phone.

My wilier(s) have wide forks but the nut goes in some distance. It's not flush to the outside.

  • So you end up sunk to the nuts?

Largest in stock is 31mm. But have found a 40mm at total cycling. I'll phone around locally tomorrow as I dont want to wait another week before my daughter can get back on her bike.

40mm and a bit of fettling sounds likely then
  • 40 will probably do fine by my reckoning.

I'll check my box tomorrow but I think I got rid of all the spares I had: I bought a set of 105 calipers years ago and each one came with 4 different length bolts.
  • Ha, I got the vernier out and measured it properly rather than a tape measure in the dark. I need a 30max or 28min. I'll see if I can pick one up tomorrow.
