Garmin speed sensor

Is there any advantage in using the Garmin speed sensor over relying on GPS? I guess there must be as they come bundled with the latest Garmin computers but do they make a difference if I’m only looking at Strava that uses its own GPS data based algorithms once the ride is uploaded?

    Only if you fear gps dropout.
    I stopped using mine years ago.

    The only time I use my speed sensor is when the bike goes on the rollers.

    In places with less good GPS reception they will help you record you speed and distance correctly. Strava only looks at the recorded GPS latitude & longitude points so it won't notice you used one.

    It will help keep the data displayed on your head unit more accurate. If the GPS signal drops without one it just drops to 0 speed.

    Only really found this for my self on heavily wooded climbs.

    Other than that it will probably help increase accuracy of the information you are given, by what degree im not sure... negligible would be a guess.
