Specialised Stumpjumper 2008 rear shock replacement

Hi. I want to replace the rear shock on my spec. stumpy 2008 but I'm having trouble finding info. I want to change it for something brain-less and up-to-date (ie not like for like). Some easily-beaten people have told me it's not possible and I have to bin the whole bike. That's not an option! Any options and advice would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.

    ...at least I think it's 2008! The bloke I bought it off said it was 2012, but that soon proved to be incorrect.

    Specialized used some stupid custom shocks and the one fitted to your Stumpy is 193.7mm i2i with 41.3mm stroke.
    You could swap it for a 200mm x 50mm shock. That will slightly steepen the head angle but probably not enough to really notice.

    Thanks. Is the width of the fixing point a factor ie. the gap between the bits on the frame that the bolt goes through? Are these likely to be all different sizes? I imagine if the new one is smaller I can pad it out with a couple of washers... Also the external diameter of the shock - I notice there's not much room between the top pivot and the shock. I'm hoping someone's going to tell me theyve already done it and what shock they used!

    Is there a website for Specialized bike riders? It would not surprise me in the slightest if there was and (of course) they will have already solved your problem for you. They will be queuing up to advise you! :)

    Good idea - I havent found a specifically specialised website, but Ive just found MTBR has a specialised forum, so Ive posted it there too. Thanks for the idea!

    Yes, the shocks all come with a standard sized eye and you then buy the right width fitting kit for your frame, no reason why you can't re-use yours in the new shock, it pushes out the shock bush but can be a very tight fit.
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

    Hi dvrm, where did you get with this? I have a 2008 Stumpjumper with carbon frame. The AFR shock has died and I'm told it cannot be serviced. Looking for alternatives. Was looking at Fox DPS but I don't think it will fit in the top mount. Older Fox RP23 will fit I'm told, but they are all old now. Also Rock Shock RL has been mentioned.

    Also dims I have are e2e 184.2mm and 44,2mm stroke.

    Your shock is more likely to be e2e 7 -1/4" and stroke 1-3/4"
    Using those sizes will make it easier to find.
