Chain size for child's MTB derrailleur

I put a 1/8 x 1/2 single speed chain on my daughter's Hoy Bonaly 20" MTB with a six speed derrailleur. It's noisy. I suspect it's too wide for the cassette. Will the chain damage the cassette?
Thanks

It may not damage anything, but it's really not designed for the application. It will rub all over the place and won't shift properly. Why did you fit it?

Should be using a 3/32 x 1/2 inch chain, it will be rubbing the next larger gear and possible the rear mech side plates.

    It's a freewheel not a cassette fitted.

For the price of a chain, just get the right one!

  • I fitted it because I had it! It was only when it was noisy that I realised it might be the wrong size. Thanks for the guidance.
