How far is too far to cycle with coronavirus uk lockdown?

Just generally wondered how far others are cycling outdoors? Personally, I have dropped some large distances and just doing 20-30 mile rides. I avoid cycle paths/canals due to the number of people walking. Head out into isolated country lanes, always alone and only once per day. Tempted to do further due to the excellent recent weather but holding back. Going more for pushing things and due to no traffic have broken many PBs What are others doing? Would a 50 or 60 be pushing things?

    Nope.
Do whatever you are comfortable with.

Just be extra vigilant with car drivers on quieter roads

I'd say significantly more than you normally do is too far.
There's some UCI/BC guidance going round basically saying don't push yourself too hard so you don't end up in hospital, and you don't go so hard it depresses your immune system - i.e. be sensible

Maintaining my training plan - but am not doing the longer (200km+) rides as it'd be soul destroying to do those close to home, and don't want to risk being 50 miles from home and have a derailleur hanger break on me. Don't listen to the imbeciles who tell you that you're somehow endangering life by riding a bike. They're pissed off that you can continue to do your hobby while they can't do whatever it is that they enjoy.

My thinking is as far as I am comfortable going non-stop.

I am not sure. You have no chance.

Yeah I work on the basis that if I have a mechanical I won't be able to go anywhere for a cake while I wait for a lift. Furthest I've been is 50 miles. Didn't enjoy it much.

Just indoors for me atm, fortunately have a large garden for fresh air or the turbo if warm as of late!

I'm riding outdoors - no reason not to. But not pushing it and riding between 1-2 hrs tops. Mostly on back roads..

Also still riding outdoors, practicing "endurance" paced rides. I'm also trying to take more care, not just going downhill slower, but not reaching for the bottle near a corner or if I hear a car coming. I did one interval session, and one hilly ride, but generally not giving it the beans.

I have shortened my rides significantly... 4-5 hours down to 90 minutes or so. Don't feel too comfortable going too far from home. I am trying to do some "speedwork" instead, to keep some motivation. Traffic is so quiet that I can use some A roads I would normally avoid. On Monday I did a mile on the A 3400 and wasn't passed by a single car... it was surreal.

60-90 minutes for me on lanes around and about home. I'm on the edge of the South Downs so have some pretty pleasant routes.

A lot of indoors and the odd 60-120 minutes near to home. Been cycling to the shops as well, nice quiet roads.

I have been cycling more and increasing my rides with the roads being so quiet.
Completed my first 100 mile last week. Surprised to see so many people of all ages out on their bikes.

This really is the best time for road cycling. It would be silly to waste it.
Not so good for cycle paths though.

  • A 2 bottle ride is the limit. That is unless you have 3 bottle cages on your frame 😁

That would be a very long ride for me... I am referred to as "the cactus"... I can probably do 200 km with 2 bottles, unless it's really hot

    :D

If I weigh myself before and after a ride, I tend to lose a pound or two, so definitely don't drink enough... but that has never been a problem during short or even very long rides and never had cramps either.

After a winter on TrainerRoad i'm enjoying being out on the fantastically quiet roads. I currently see more cyclists and walkers than cars currently which means I'm determined to get the best out of this situation and enjoy the roads whilst it lasts. I'm lucky to still be employed so I'm working from home so an hour each day and a 50 mile ride on Sunday is a good balance for me.

  • Was thinking if getting a couple of the further water bottles. Would save any interactions on a longer ride https://bikerumor.com/2019/10/09/soma-further-is-worlds-largest-cycling-water-bottle-delivers-a-full-38oz-pour/

I try and stay fairly local, doing a loop around my house for an hour or two. If I want further I just do the loop again. It seems if you do it the other way round second time it is surprisingly different, not as good as doing a single ride but way more interesting than laps

Personally I'm doing about 20 miles away from home, so if the worse happens the wife can play the AA and pick me up in 30/40 mins. Walking isn't an option :-)

Make sure the Di2 battery is charged.

I've never been one for longer rides anyway, I'm doing my usual 1 to 2 hour rides.

Go wherever you like as long as it's within your limit and if you had a catastrophic mechanical failure (how common is that really?) you can get home safely. If someone in your household can pick you up I don't see it as a massive issue.
