11-speed cassette weirdness

So, new wheels (Hunt) and I’ve fitted a 105 11-speed cassette. When I set everything up at the weekend, I gave the cassette some welly when tightening it and all seemed fine. Then it gradually worked loose for some reason. The only way it seems happy is to stick the spacer on first but I didn’t think 11-speed cassettes needed a spacer on 11-speed hubs! Have I got that wrong or should I reinstall it all but grease the threads a bit more? All set up with the spacer now and no sign of problems but I’d rather have it correct.

    Not an 11-34 cassette, by any chance? They need a spacer on 11-speed freehubs.

    Hmm. Just put a new 11-34 on summer bike's new wheel. As filthy Jan not had the bike on the road yet. So I should add in a spacer on the inner edge then?

    Yes I think you should. The 11-34 is designed to fit a 10-speed hub so the carrier is slightly dished. Found a good explanation at https://cyclingtips.com/2018/03/shimano-ultegra-hg-800-11-34t-cassette-review/

    So the 11-34 is just a mountain bike cassette with road branding.

    Yes and it was/is a common range with 10 speed groupsets.

    Have (the knees of) humans got weaker since the days of 52/42t and 13-18t gearing.

    I rode a 52/42 with a corn cob freewheel years back and had hurting knees. These days I use something a bit lower and its much gentler on this old mans knees. While I am nostalgic for the look of my old polished aluminium Stronglight cranks I don't miss creaking up a climb at 25rpm with my kneecaps seemingly ready to ping off one little bit.

    I was going to say, my knees have definitely got weaker.

    it seems that you are using the hg700 or hg800 where both of them are shimano mtb spline ready, which means you need a spacer for a 11sp road spline (freehub), even if this cassette is for use on road bikes. well,

    I have one to fit at some point to my Mavic wheels.

    I’d say to try it without first but be prepared to have to take the cassette off and fit it afterwards!
