2020 targets

I start... a few long brevets on the cards...

300 km "The Dean" in March Oxford-Chepstow-Oxford

as a prelude to

400 km "LWL" in May London-Wales-London

Then I have to fit in a permanent brevet of 300 km in Wales, "The Elenith" along the most remote parts between Rhyader and Tregaron

I am also organising two new Audax events in Wales: the 200 is selling well

    Intent on Cycling Commuting on a budget, but keep on breaking/crashing/finding nice stuff to buy.

  • Eat more moderate and less excessive amounts of cold X buns; chocolate raisins; peanut butter and jam sandwiches.

    Build my endurance legs back up after a disappointing outdoor cycling year in 2019, it got to the point where 40+ miles rides felt really daunting and I was filled with self doubt. Been doing 2/3 days most weeks where I do ~2+ hours on the turbo, last year I did far too many turbo sessions closer to 30mins and this messed me up for the outdoor season from around March.

    Stick with this ~13 Zwift TT Tune-Up training plan, even though some of the sessions I've done in the first 8 days have been really dull.

    Try and get across to Isle Of Wight to do the Ventnor esplanade to Down Lane climb, plus ride round the island.

    Bwlch Y Groes from the south.

    Road To Hell.

    Hillside/Gwaenysgor climb on the road without having to walk part of it, like I had to on the Voodoo last November while stuck in 24/17 gear on 28mm 4 Seasons.

    Try not to obsess so much about routes around the South Downs cat4 hills, the weather forecasts and Google Maps live traffic reports!

    * Get the guts to climb proper pyrenees next time I'm in the basque country. With my fitness level, I don't think I can quite manage it on 36x28 though.

    Distance wise, I've left it the same as last year - on reduced commute days and probably more time with Little SB it's probably going to be all I can sensibly do.

    I'm fancying improving my TT time - it's a sporting course, so not looking to bust the 20minute mark - but I think I could push it to be constantly in the mid 25s if I work hard.

    Get back on the bike. Currently looking at end of February if I'm lucky. Anything beyond that will be a bonus.

    My bright idea doesn't seem very bright atm.
    Dunno. Something with a lake swim and a flat bike course that's less than two hours away.

    Considering a combined 15km run on the commute on Tuesday has left me walking like John Wayne and feeling like a Dalek when looking at stairs I think I have a way to go before I splash the cash.

    Commute by bike at least 100 days. This would be at least 2200 miles, so would break the 2000 mile/year target I have never got through before.

    I'm aiming to keep my annual distance around the 5-6000km mark I've been at for the last few years but more focussed on fun rides rather than commutes.

    I've already logged as many mtb miles as I did in the whole of last year just by going out riding in the dark instead of going out for pints!

    10k km for the year.
    It's 10 years since I did the South Downs Way in a day, so I really want to have another go at that, preferably by June or July at the latest.
    If I get that, I might try a couple of huge rides in Central Italy that I have been thinking about for 5 years...

    Yeah, I did wonder about that. Never done one before, so not sure what the 'rules' are. Seen some people calling it an Audax and others not. It'll be 'fun' anyway - smack in the middle of race season :)

    Done - 8 events at a 2 day Omnium at Newport Velodrome. Awesome - really enjoyed the racing and friendly atmosphere. Very different from the road races and crits I've done in the past.

    I'm going to do a couple of hill climbs in September/October... see how bad I am at it, maybe with a view to qualify for the national in 2021... I might just end up like those fat guys hopelessly chasing points to get a Cat. 3 licence... :#

    Interesting, as my recollection was that the Hill Climb idea was a product of the lockdown, whereas I was thinking about it in early March!

    Oh well, I ended up doing a bit more than just a couple and I ended up racing in the National in 2020...
    2021 will most likely bring more of the same... I can't see myself returning to long distance cycling any time soon... if ever

    66 days and unlikely to do anymore. Still proportionaly not quite there with 25% of the year working from home. Did manage to break 2,000 miles for the first time. Modest, but pleased with it.
  • Guess you can't be blamed for that.

    I've hit 2k KM which isn't bad but helped hugely by lockdown
  • I think I cycled 90% of my commutes this year, which is nothing after 12 march, surprised I did as much as 1765km. Terrible year, hoping for better to come.
  • I have used the Brompton (commuter) 6 times since March... :)

    But mileage has gone up, with a lot more training time in my hands... B)

    Should break 11,000 kms outside, plus what should be over 9,000 kms on Zwift. Have ridden on 310 days so far in 2020, and expect to break 600 hours in the saddle.

    Final tally was 71 commutes by bike. 2,400 miles altogether. I'll carry the 100 commutes target to next year. I only managed a single 100km ride this year, I must try for more next year.
  • Turns out I was too hasty to fit a studded front tyre to my Brompton. Chances are I won't have to go in until the spring...
