Giro route - who decides where it goes?
The route for the Giro next year will be announced next week, I was wondering how the route is chosen? Is it the race organisers, solely?
I'm asking because I have a house in Abruzzo; in 2017 it went up the Blockhaus for the first time in years, and through Abruzzo for the first time since 2009. I think it has then been through Abruzzo every year since, and rumours are there will be another stage there next year. Specifically, it has passed through the town of Chieti every year, and I know they patched up a lot of the roads in 2017.
It starts in Hungary next year, and has started in various "foreign" countries for several years now.
Do towns or cities or local councils pay to have a stage for 5 years? Do they bid for them? In some ways it makes logistical sense to have a stage in Abruzzo, as it is central and is a way to connect the toe of the country with the more "glamourous" regions to the north.
I told the Mrs it was going through Abruzzo for the first time in nearly 10 years in 2017, and I might not get the chance to see the race locally ever again :?

Yes the organisers decide but yes towns bid to host stages. It's good for their tourism and good for the giro as they get cash.0

If it's decided it's going to Sicily, Cantabria or some parts of Genoa and Naples you don't need to know. Capire ??0

The Abruzzo stage will be the tenth and should be San Salvo - Tortoreto Lido.
Seeing it is mid race and stage 11 finishes in Rimini, I would also expect that stage to start close to the Abruzzo/Le Marche border. Maybe San Benedetto del Tronto.

I have seen something translated from Italian that said that, although it seemed to suggest a couple of 20-22% climbs as well. I also saw a separate piece about a TT at Ortona. Given the stunning scenery Abruzzo has to offer, a long pan flat stage seems a waste.0

I meant the stage from the Abruzzo border to Rimini would be pan flat.
Stage 10 has been rumoured to include climbing.

If the Italian rumour mill over on CN is correct, the only thing now left unknown is that Abruzzo/Le Marche border start town.

From today's reports, Porto S.Elpidio seems to be the missing start town and it's Brindisi for the stage 8 finish.
Only 5 MTFs in the race and one is risking going up the Stelvio, a week earlier than usual. After Etna on stage 5, it will be an incredible ten stages until the next. Probably the Olympic factor playing a part.
