Defy to TCR - mistake?

  • Narrowed it down to:

    Defy Advanced Pro 2
    Endurace CF SL 8.0
    Domane SL5 Disc

I had the domane sl5 disc a couple years back when it came with 40mm carbons.

Comfortable but a bit dull was the reason I sold it tbh...though the person I sold it to liked it enough. Endurace would be my choice out of those.
  • Based on reviews, opinion and real world feed back I think the Defy would be my option.

Funny but I test rode a Propel disc today and felt good, actually quite a plush bike, seems more comfortable than the TCR which makes sense as less stiff overall despite the 'flat panel' frame which usually equates to stiff. Again, aero bars which felt good.
  • Lots of people say the propel is more comfy

  • Have to say, weight aside, really fancy a Domane, might be the whiskey mind.

I bought one in an effort to help my upper back/neck pain. Not at all disappointed. It’s very comfortable indeed. Mines a rim brake model, slightly older but weighs in a smidge over 8kg in size 54. I’d be torn between a disk brake domane and the defy if I were to be looking at the moment. Nice problem to have!
  • It is. Think I'll see if I can test one next week. I know it'll be more lexus than Ferrari and that's fine

When I upgraded from my Defy the options were a Propel or a TCR.

I test rode them back to back, no less than 3 times each and I preferred the TCR. There was nothing in it comfort wise to be honest as I understand they have identical geometry. If anything the ride on the Propel felt stiffer.

One thing I preferred about the Propel was the aero bars but that's something I can add to my TCR over the winter months.

Interesting as my hands sat on the hoods of the disc shifters with the aero bars. On the TCR the knuckle of the bar is at the hood and seems to send a lot of buzz into the rider. As you say, aero bars on the TCR a good idea. Geo there or there abouts, stand over higher on the propel of course. The propel had a boat load of spacers which look crap and would come out too. Being honest a propel a non starter really, but going through a strange time with my riding after a strange few weeks and almost feel like retiring but know it will come back. It always does.
  • I'm semi reluctant to swap the bars in case someone wants to buy it, even if a bar swap could add value.

But, perhaps, Deda super zero bars, which I love, and better tape will sort it.

Worth a punt ? I aim to replace my stock TCR bars with my Ritchey neo classic which are in my shed, but can't seem to find the time to get round to it and agree with you when selling easier with stock kit. I did swap my tyres and tubes to latex this morning as three punctures last week. Those Deda bars look terrific value though the 'consumer' reviews suggest issues.
  • I've got them already on another bike. Always loved them

  • Any updates on your bike selection? I’m in the same boat as I’ve bought a Cannondale super six but thinking now I should of gone for a endurance bike, thinking about a domane or Roubaix myself, also considering the canyon endurance which i’l be test riding on Thursday.

I think of all the bikes out there the offerings from the big brands make sense in terms of value and spec. This dropped onto my radar the other day and personally I think it looks amazing. However, the geo sits neither here nor there in terms of reach and a 53cm has a 140 headtube which for an endurance bike is low. Add a conical spacer and some spacers and back in the realms of 180 but would prefer to try a bike first. The head tube on the 56 taller, but the reach longer. Oddly it looks to me like the bike comes with an inline seat post, which I like.

Otherwise, for me, the clear front runner the Giant Defy.

Why did you drop the endurace?
  • Just a bit normal? Adding the Roubaix sport in now though.
