..need to get me a lighter wheel set, maybe under 1.8kg, for 2.3-2.6 wide tyres....around £275 budget.
I admit that I have no idea what all the numbers that come with wheels mean... got bolt thru fork and 10 speed cassette.
Would like bolt on rotors, not centre lock.
Any help... please?

  • Bit over budget but not by much, check out hunt bike wheels - recently bought a set of trail wides and for the price they are awesome - if you're unsure of anything you can give them a ring and ask, super friendly team they have and very helpful.

  • Yeah well...need to keep within budget.
Also, I have a 1x12 setup... I guess that matters for the freehub choice?
I honestly hate all this myriad of technical specifications for hubs...

Have a look at Superstar Components. 25%off some wheel sets with code SEP19.

Which 1x12, Shimano or SRAM and which fitment, You could be needing an XD Freehub, a stock Shimano HG freehub or the new Shimano HG+ freehub! Assuming you intend using one designed to fit your presumably HG 10 speed freehub (such as SRAM NX or Sunrace casettes) it won't be an issue.

In your first post it was a 10 speed now it's 11 and the link says 12...... when you decide what you actually have people can advise on freehub!

  • Yep, I confused myself big time. Of course it’s a 12, and I’ve ordered now the superstar wheels (JBA, thank you for discount code, it’s worked) after the Sonder guys told me which hubs I need.
Thank you for helping me out... will go with 2.6 and 2.4 tyres. TrailBoss and Trail King.

  • I need to know also, my budget is 300$ for buying 27.5 wheel-set. Are kenda is better??
  • +1 for Superstar. And if you can be patient then wait and watch their promo offers for a while. Seems like there's a 20-25% code for most months, but then when a bank holiday or something rolls around there's usually a 30-35% one. I think on New Year's day this year it was 40% off or maybe even more. Scroll back through the posts on their facebook page and you can work out the pattern. My guess is the next major pricing slash will be Black Friday.

I got some Element V6 29er wheels for my XC/bikepacking rig. Not put many miles on them yet but they seem great so far. Don't know how they'd stand up to proper MTB abuse but for my kind of riding I'd say the hubs are every bit as good as Hope, and miles cheaper. I suspect the Element rim is a Kinlin or something similar, so the same kind of spec you'd get from Hunt.

How is the spoke tension on the wheels, have you had to true the wheels since buying them?

I'm after a set of 27.5 wheels for a hardtail I've built up currently using an old set of 26er mavic wheels on it for the time being, was looking at hope fortus 26 rims and pro 4 hubs.

The superstar wheels are tempting though due to the price.

No issues but there's only about 100 miles on them. Just spun a wheel to check and they're no less true than my RS4/Kinlin road wheels built by Big Al at Wheelcraft were at the same point. 1-2mm wobble in one tiny spot - looks like from a hit rather than a tension issue, but I'm no wheelbuilder so couldn't say much more detail than that. Going round the wheels and squeezing spoke pairs together they all seem consistent.

My round-the-corner mechanic charges £7.50 for a truing/tension and if I had a real issue I'm sure he wouldn't charge much more to slack everything off and start again. So even if the build on both wheels was pants we're talking like an extra £30 max on workshop labour and probably actually a lot less. Doesn't even come close to bridging the gap to the cost of Hope, and it probably won't be necessary anyway.

If it was my main wheelset on my main bike I'd pony up for Hope for an extra edge and to ease any possible doubts in my mind (and indeed my 4 season road bike has the RS4/kinlin wheels I had built locally), but for pretty much anything else I'm just as happy saving cash and getting nearly the same functionality out of those superstar hubs. I got my set to replace the OEM wheels on a 2014 Boardman MTB 29er hardtail that weren't tubeless compatible. Saved me over 500g in weight (!), got me onto a wider rim, and allowed me to go tubeless. These days that bike only goes out 2-3x per year, primarily on bikepacking trips, and I paid less than £200 for the wheels so you're not likely to see a complaint out of me!
