Disc Wheels for Road Bike

I need new wheels for a new winter bike, and ive finally given in to discs.

I'm a bit ignorant in the post rim brake world.

1. Can I put wheels that are listed as for 12mm through axle/142mm width in my QR/135mm width frame (it's an alloy cannondale synapse)? I ask because virtually all decent options seem to be for thru axle. There are adaptors available, so I want to use these if necessary.

2. Which wheels for under £300? As above they need to be compatible with the frame (with adaptors if necessary).

3. Which post mount cable disc calipers should I buy?

This is going to be my winter bike, but it's group rides that are sometimes a bit competitive, so I want lightish & aeroish (I'm realistic here).

Thanks for any help

  • Some wheels are covertable to 100/135mm QR but not all. Shimano wheels are not for example. There are slide in QR adapeter which some use but only for the front.

So the answer to 1) depends on your hub/wheel.

Most brakes are now flat mount and calipers go with levers. The post mount caliper is a separate buy. You'll end spending more. TRP spyres work with normal shimano STIs and and are cheap. Other wise shimano 105 R7020 brakes are a similar price to tiagra 10 speed.

Which wheels for under £300. Well.apart from mine probably something from the shimano or Campagnolo stable.

  • I've just bought a set of 3T discus on sale at Merlin linked below. Not the lightest or tubeless but neither were high on my list of priorities they are nice and wide and pretty robust. I certainly wouldn't pay the RRP though!. They seem well made and ride well (I'm using them with through axles but they come with all the adapters for QR) not had them long enough to comment on reliability but so far no issues.

  • Hunt allow you to adapt the hubs to QR or Thru axle when you order. They are tubeless ready as well:

There are plenty of detractors regarding Hunt wheels in these parts, but I can only speak for myself and say mine have been problem free for the last couple of years.

Robust? With only 24 spokes on a disc wheel I dont think I would trust them with my weight...

Admittedly I'm no heavyweight, but there's more to the strength of a wheel than the number of spokes.

If and I know that may be a big If, you could find another 50 squids you could look at these which seem to be well thought of.
